Having carefully examined the year’s general performance in 2017 commence WAEC, the following were identified as the leading reasons why Candidates Fail 2017 Commerce WAEC. None of WAEC observation get close to personal reasons that candidate may attached to their failure.
Some of the weaknesses observed in the candidates’ scripts are:
- Insufficient knowledge of the subject: Most of the candidates did not have good understanding and knowledge of the subject. As a result, they could not satisfactorily attempt the questions that need them to apply their knowledge of commerce.
- Many candidates write abbreviations of some wards. Other use phrases to answer question when they are expected to make a complete sentence.
- Few candidates attempted the question on calculation and the performance was not encouraging.
Suggested Remedies
The chief examiner pens the following remedies in mitigating the number of students’ failure.
- The candidates should be encouraged to study standard and recommended text books on commerce in their preparation for the examination.
- The teachers should endeavour to give notes to the students and do not allow them rely on short notes on the subject.
- Teachers should also expose students to calculation questions.
Candidate’s Strength
- Candidates performed well in questions on ‘retail outlet and the one on business terms’ which are in questions 3 and 7 respectively.
- Most candidates observed the rubrics and attempted the required numbers of questions
