Candidates weaknesses were noticed in the following areas:

  1. inability to correctly define concepts
  2. inability to correctly write IUPAC name of compounds
  3. inability to list two forces of attraction that exist between covalent molecules
  4. inability to write the electron configuration of 26Fe3+
  5. inability to describe the chemical tests for CO2, H2 and O2
  6. inability to state the composition of water gas
  7. inability to describe a simple experiment to determine the type of hardness in a sample of water
  8. poor communication skills

WAEC Recommendations for the Candidates

The following remedies were however suggested: candidates

  1. should prepare adequately for the examinations;
  2. should learn and use appropriate technical terms when necessary;
  3. should be familiar with the examination’s syllabus;
  4. should understand the requirements of questions before responding to them
  5. should be able to differentiate among phenomenon, process and agent in chemical reactions;
  6. should improve on their communication skills.

Candidate’s Strengths

Candidates’ strengths were noticed in the following areas:

  1. ability to name example of acid – base indicators;
  2. ability to identify NO2 as an oxidizing agent;
  3. ability to differentiate between a primary cell and a secondary cell;
  4. ability to give examples of primary and secondary cells;
  5. ability to list properties of an element which shows periodicity;
  6. knowledge of methods of collecting gases;
  7. simple calculations involving mass;
  8. industrial preparation of ammonia;
  9. uses of ammonia;
  10. applications of electrolysis.
