The candidates were unable to:

  1. explain the factors that influence feed formulation in farm animals
  2. describe the process of preparing palm kernel cake
  3. differentiate between broiler starter and broiler finisher marsh
  4. explain the factors hindering livestock production in West Africa
  5. describe the process of digestion of cassava tuber in the mouth of a pig
  6. explain drenching and dipping as used in livestock production
  7. differentiate between the digestive system of a goat and a chicken
  8. explain rumination and coprophagy.
  9. explain the reason for creep feeding, steaming-up and flushing of fam animals
  10. define pasteurization and importance of pasteurization of milk
  11. explain the importance of starving an animal before slaughtering
  12. list pre-slaughtering activities

Chief Examiner Recommendation

Consequently, having identified weaknesses in the candidates’ scripts, the Chief Examiners’ recommend as follows:

  1. Only competent graduates of Animal Science/Production should be saddled with the responsibility of teaching the subject in Senior Secondary Schools;
  2. Animal Husbandry should be taught as a practical oriented subject through laboratory activities, field trips, excursions etc.
  3. Adequate facilities and textbooks on Animal Husbandry should be made available to enhance the teaching-learning of Animal Husbandry in Senior Secondary Schools.

Observed Students’ Strength

Majority of the candidates showed an appreciable improvement in their ability to:

  1. explain ration as used in animal production
  2. mention the factors that affect the productivity of pastures
  3. name the parts of the reproductive system of bull and hen
  4. name the external parts of a cock
  5. name the viral diseases of poultry
  6. state the signs that could be observed in a sick farm animal
  7. name the body systems in farm animals
  8. state the importance of rangeland
  9. list the practices that could improve pastures
  10. name the agents involved in marketing animal products
  11. list milk products
  12. state the factors that affect milk yield in cows
