SUB-TOPIC 1: Meaning of Networking

Networking is a system of connecting two or more computers together in order to share resources or transfer information. The computers on a network may be connected through cables, telephone lines, wireless links or satellite. Every computer connected to the network is said to be on the network and should have a network interface card (NIC).

Networking can also be defined as a collection of computers and devices interconnected by communications channels that facilitate communication among users and allow users to share resources.

Categories of Networking

  1. Local Area Network (LAN)
  2. Wide Area Networks (WAN)
  3.   Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
  4. Personal Area Network
  5. Wireless Local Area Network

Local Area Network  (LAN)

This is one of the original categories of network, and one of the simplest.  LAN networks connect computers together over relatively small distances, such as within a single building or within a small group of buildings.
