Fundamental human rights have been categorized into civic rights, political rights, economic rights and social rights.
Civic and political rights: are a class of rights that protect individuals’ freedom from infringement by governments, social organizations, and private individuals. They ensure one’s ability to participate in the civil and political life of the society and state without discrimination or repression. It is also called first generation rights by Krel Vasak because it was the first legally binding of the universal declaration of human right (UDHR).
Civic rights include:
- right to life
- freedom from torture
- right to freedom from slavery
- right to fair trial
- freedom of speech
- freedom of thought
- conscience and religion
- right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association
- rights to personal liberty and security
- rights to freedom of expression
