VIRAL DISEASES
- Foot and Mouth Diseases (FMD)
This is a viral disease that affects feet, lips and tongue of ruminant animals
Mode of Transmission
It is transmitted by contact with infected animals or contact with contaminated feed of diseased animal.
Signs and Symptoms
- Inability to eat
- Sore on the feet, lips and tongue of affected animal
- Pain
- Weakness
- Lameness
- Death
Prevention and control
- Vaccination
- Isolation of diseased animals from healthy ones
- Bury the dead animals deeply
- Good management practices
- Rinderpest (Cattle plague)
This is an infectious viral disease of cattle, domestic buffalo etc
Mode of Transmission
- By direct contact with affected animal.
- Eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water
Signs and Symptoms
- High fever
- Loss of appetite
- Acute bloody stained diarrhoea
- Animals grind their teeth
- Most animals die 6-12 days after the onset of these clinical signs
- Reduced milk yield
- Lesion around the mouth, nose and the genital trait
Prevention and control
- Vaccination
- Kill and bury the dead animals deeply
