Sub–topic 1: CATEGORIES OF HUMAN RIGHTS
Fundamental human rights have been categorized into civic rights, political rights, economic rights and social rights.
- Civic and political rights are a class of rights that protect individuals’ freedom from infringement by governments, social organizations, and private individuals. They ensure one’s ability to participate in the civil and political life of the society and state without discrimination or repression. It is also called first generation rights by Krel Vasak because it was the first legally binding of the universal declaration of human right (UDHR).
Civic rights include:
- right to life
- freedom from torture
- right to freedom from slavery
- right to fair trial
- freedom of speech
- freedom of thought
- conscience and religion
- right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association
- rights to personal liberty and security
- rights to freedom of expression
Political rights include:
- right to vote and be voted for
- right to equal access to public service
ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL RIGHTS
These are known as second-generation of rights or security-oriented rights. It is also known as soft rights. It talks about economic empowerment to improve the lives of citizens by the government. These rights include:
- right to food, water and housing
- right to adequate health care
- right to work and other means of earning a living
- Right to adequate/ decent standard of living.
- Right to qualitative basic education and adequate shelter
- Right to freedom of movement
