  • Meaning of land reclamation
  • Reclamation method
  • Importance of land reclamation.

SUB–TOPIC 1: MEANING OF LAND RECLAMATION

Land reclamation is a term applied to the utilization and improvement of water and land resources for agricultural and other purposes through irrigation, drainage or tidal marches, restoration of strip mine areas, and other construction activities. The idea of land reclamation was initiated in 1992 in US department of interior to stimulate the settlement and economic development of sixteen (16) sparsely populated western states by reclaiming the lands through irrigation.

EVALUATION

  1. What is land reclamation?
  2. Explain the word “Reclamation.”
  3. What was the reasons the initiation of land reclamation of 1992?

SUB-TOPIC 2: RECLAMATION METHODS

Depending on the environment, different methods have been employed to displace water logging in an environment. These methods include afforestation, construction of barrier etc.

Afforestation

It is a method by which trees are planted on a land area to protect the soil. When this is done, evaporation reduces the volume of surface water. Evapotranspiration is a combined effort of evaporation and transportation. Evaporation is the process by which water drain up in form of moisture from a surface. Transportation is the process by which water travel from the roots of plants up to its leaves and it passes out into the air in form of vapour.

Sand filling: This is the simplest method of land reclamation. It is done mechanically. It is a process by which areas covered with water is displaced with sand. Loads of sand are deposited in area covered with water to submerge the water. This method is practiced in area close to rivers. As a result of urban growth and population explosion, flood plain of rivers are encroached upon by people.

Construction of barrier: This barrier can be in form of dam to check the flow of rivers. The idea behind this is to regulate the flow of water. It is also aimed at storing water for use. Rivers are channelized to ease the flow of water. Excess water is stored in reservoir.
