Methods of propagation and planting ornamental plants: Ornamental plants are cultivated through a number of cultural practices or methods. Some factors need to be considered
The factors are:
- Choice of site
- Planting materials
- Method of cultivation
- Use of prepared beds
- Direct sowing into the soil
- Use of nylon bags
- Use of pots
- Provision of shades
- Use of loamy soil /organic manure
- Regular watering
SOURCES OF PLANTING MATERIALS
- Established private horticultural gardens
- Higher institutions
- Governmental owned botanical garden
- Private houses and offices
- Nigeria Institute for Horticultural Research (NIHORT)
- From road sides and bushes
METHODS OF PROPAGATION
- Propagation by sexual: This is the act of using seeds to produce plants which look exactly like their parents. Examples of plants propagated by seeds are:
- Sunflower
- Cana lily
- Crotalaria
- Flam of the forest
- Commelina
- Lantan
Advantages of seed propagation
- Seeds are small and very convenient to handle and transport
- Seeds can last for a long time when properly stored
- Seeds make establishment of large population of plants comparatively easy
Disadvantages
- Plants raised from seeds may not grow and mature uniformly
- Seeds may fail to germinate due to dormancy.
