GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
A Candidate for postgraduate studies in the University of Benin must have obtained at least five (5) credits in WASC, NECO, GCE (ordinary level or their equivalents,) NOTE: A CREDIT PASS IN MATHS AND ENGLISH IS REQUIRED.
Four credits at Ordinary level, plus OND (not pass), NCE, IJMB or Advance level passes or any other equivalent.
A holder of a Pass (Degree/Diploma) is not qualified for admission into the postgraduate programme of the University of Benin. In addition, all holders of 3rd class degree must possess PGD to be considered for admission into the Masters programmes.
Candidates who obtained Masters degree but with Weighted Average Score (WAS) between 55.0-59% can only be considered for admission into the M.Phil programme in the first instance.
A candidate applying for the Ph.D in any programme of the University of Benin must have obtained a minimum weighted average score of 60% in the Masters degree.
A candidate applying for the PhD with a Masters degree from any other University who in his/her Masters study has not previously taken the compulsory courses or their equivalents similar to the ones in the University of Benin shall, on admission, be required to offer and pass such courses with a minimum of 60%.
Only students who have the NYSC discharge, exemption or exclusion certificate can be allowed to clear into the different courses.

Transcripts

Candidates should request their former Universities/Institutions to forward their academic transcript(s) to the “Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies”, to reach him not later than 8 weeks from the date of this publication. FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE:

DEPARTMENT OF AGRIC ECONS & EXTENSION SERVICES

Admission Requirements

M.Sc. Degree Programme in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Extension:

Candidates for admission to these programmes shall hold a first degree of the University of Benin or any other University approved by the Senate of the University of Benin in any of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension, and any other related discipline. The Minimum qualification for admission shall be a Second Lower division.

Ph.D Degree Programmes: The entry requirement for the Ph.D Programmes shall be a Masters Degree of the University of Benin or any other University approved by the Senate, in any of the disciplines indicated in (a) above with an average M.Sc Score of 60% and above.

Duration of Programmes:

a) Sc. (Agric Econs) & M.Sc. (Agric Extension)

Full-Time: Minimum of 4 semesters – Maximum of 6 semesters

Part Time: Minimum of 6 semesters – Maximum of 8 semesters

(b) Ph.D programme: (i) Full-Time 6-10 semesters (ii) Part-Time 8-12 semesters

DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SCIENCE

Admission Requirements:

(a) Master of Science (M.Sc) Programme:

To be admitted into the degree of Master of Science programme, a candidate shall hold:

(i) A Bachelors honours degree in Agriculture with option in Animal Science with a minimum of Second-Class Lower Division of the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin;

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme:

To qualify for admission into the Ph.D. programme, a candidate must hold a Master degree (by thesis) in Animal Science, Agricultural Biochemistry and Nutrition, Food Science and technology from the University of Benin or any other University approved by the Senate of University of Benin. Candidates with Master by Project in Animal Science or related area of study will be admitted subject to their having minimum average score of 60 percent.

Duration of Programmes:

(a) M.Sc.: Minimum of 24 (twenty-four) months and a maximum of 48 (forty-eight) calendar months for full-time while part-time shall be twice the period for the full-time. The conversion from part-time to full-time and vice-versa may be permitted.

(b) Ph.D programme: (i) Full-Time 6-10 semesters. A student who fails to submit his or her thesis within seven calendar years (84 calendar months) from the date of initial registration for the Ph.D. degree shall be asked to withdraw from the programme. However, under special circumstances, the Senate on the recommendation of the School of Postgraduate Studies after consulting with the Supervisor may grant extension of time.

DEPARTMENT OF CROP SCIENCE

Duration of Programme:

PGD Full Time: minimum of 2 semesters and Maximum of four semesters.

Part time PGD programmes runs for a minimum duration of 4 semesters and Maximum of 6 semesters

M.Sc. – Full-Time: 18-48 months

Ph.D programme: Full-Time 36-60 months

The programme shall consist of 12 months course work and 24 months intensive independent research.

Admission Requirements:

a). Postgraduate diploma programme: – candidates seeking admission for postgraduate diploma in crop science and crop protection must have at least one of the following qualifications from recognized institutions.

(i) Higher national Diploma in Agriculture or related disciplines with minimum of lower credit.

(ii) Minimum of Third-Class degree at Bachelors level in agriculture plus a minimum of five years cognate experience.

(iii) Minimum of pass in Higher National Diploma plus 10 (ten) years cognate experience.

(a) Master of Science degree in Crop Science: In addition to the general regulations and guidelines on admission, a degree of Master candidate shall hold a good honours degree in:

(i) Agriculture of the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the Senate with a minimum of second-class Lower degree.

(ii) HND Upper credit plus PGD (Crop Science) at distinction in addition to satisfying university matriculation requirement.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Crop Science: To qualify for admission into the Ph.D programme, a candidate must hold a Masters Degree of the University of Benin or any other University recognized and approved by Senate, in any of the disciplines indicated in (a) above. In addition, the candidate must have a weighted average of 60%. No entrance examination

DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES

Admission Requirements:

(a) M.Sc. Programme: In addition to the general regulations and guidelines on admission, a candidate shall:

i) Hold a good degree (minimum of Second-Class Lower Division) in Fisheries of the University of Benin or any University recognized by Senate or
ii) Hold a good degree (minimum of Second-Class Lower Division) in Agriculture, Zoology or related field of the University of Benin or any University recognized by Senate. Such candidates may be required by the Departmental Postgraduate Advisory Committee to make up possible undergraduate deficiencies by taking and passing such courses without credit.

(b) Ph.D Programmes: A candidate must possess one of the following:

i) M.Phil Degree in Fisheries or other related field of study of the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the University of Benin Senate.
ii) M.Sc. Degree in Fisheries or other related fields of study of the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the University of Benin Senate. Such candidates must have a minimum of B average in courses chosen, equivalent to a weighted average of 60% or CGPA of 3.50 minimum on a 50 point scale.

Duration of Programmes:

M.Sc: The duration for the programme shall be a minimum of twelve (12) calendar months and a maximum of forty-eight (48) calendar month.

Ph.D: The duration for the programme shall be a minimum of thirty six (36) calendar months for full time while part time is sixty (60) Calendar months Minimum and a maximum of eighty four (84) calendar months.

Any candidate whose progress is considered to be unsatisfactory in any subsequent session shall be advised to withdraw from the programme.

DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND WILDLIFE:

Admission Requirements:

Master of Science (M.Sc.) In addition to the general regulations and guidelines on admission, a candidate shall possess a minimum of:

(i) At least Second-Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) in Forestry and/or Wildlife or related field of Science from the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin.

(ii) Application from other disciplines other than Forestry and/or Wildlife may be admitted but will be required to take and pass remedial courses at the undergraduate or Master Level. Such remedial courses shall be non-credit earning. Also, candidates with Postgraduate Diploma in Forestry and/or Wildlife related discipline from the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin may be admitted.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) : To be admitted into the Ph.D programme, the applicant must hold a Master Degree of the University of Benin or any other Institution recognized by Senate, with an average grade of B in any of the discipline indicated in (a) above.

Duration of Programmes:

M.Sc. The duration for the programme shall be a minimum of eighteen (18) calendar months and a maximum of forty-eight (48) calendar month.

Ph.D: The duration for the programme shall be a minimum of twenty-four (24) calendar months and a maximum of seventy-two (72) calendar month.

For part-time programme, in both degrees, the duration shall be twice the normal period for the full-time programme.

DEPARTMENT OF SOIL SCIENCE:

Admission Requirements:

(a) M.Sc. Degree: To be admitted into the Degree of Master of Science programme, a candidate shall:

(i) Hold a good honour in Agriculture with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division of the University of Benin or any University recognized by Senate, or

(ii) Hold a good honours degree in the related Sciences with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division of the University of Benin or any University recognized by the Senate.

(iii) Students who come in with Degree outside Agriculture will be required to take remedial courses at the undergraduate level. Credit earned in such cases shall not count towards the credit requirement for the M.Sc. degree.

(b) Ph.D Degree To qualify for admission into the Ph.D programme in Soil Science, a candidate must hold a Master Degree in Soil Science or related field of the University of Benin or any other University approved by Senate, in any of the disciplines indicated and must have a weighted average of 60% or CGPA of 3.50 minimum on a 5-pointscale.

M.Sc. programme: (i) Full-Time 18-48 months (ii) Part Time 36-96 months

FACULTY OF ARTS

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND LITERATURE

Admission Requirements

M.A. Programme: A good Bachelor of Arts degree in English, not lower than Second Class (Honours), Lower Division. In addition, candidates with lower than First Class (Hons) B.A. degree are required to pass a qualifying written examination to be set by the Department.

M.Phil. Programme: (a) A Master of Arts degree obtained from an acceptable University. (b) A candidate who scores a minimum grade of 60% in a compulsory Seminar paper may be permitted to proceed to the M.Phil. Programme without completing the (M.A.) Programme.

Ph.D. Programme: (a) A Master of Arts Degree in English obtained from an acceptable University. (b) A candidate who scores a grade of a minimum of B in each of the MA. course work examinations and a minimum of B in a compulsory seminar paper may be permitted to proceed to the Ph.D. programme without completing the M.A. programme.

Duration of Programmes:

M.A.: (a) The programme is for a minimum of 2 semesters, and a maximum of 8 semesters. (b) Part-Time M.A. programme is for a minimum of 4 semesters and a maximum of 10 semesters.

(a) Full Time: (i) A minimum of Full-Time 4-6 semesters for students with B.A. (ii) A minimum of 2- 6 semesters for students with M.A.

DEPARTMENT OF FINE AND APPLIED ARTS

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

(A) M.A. Art History Programme Admission into the M. A. (Art History programme is open to:

(i) Candidates who already possess the first degree in (a) Art History; (b) Any major areas of the Fine/Applied Arts and (c ) Art Education with minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University.

(ii) Candidates with Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree in any major areas of the Fine/Applied Arts with a minimum cumulative weighted average of 60% from a recognized University.

(iii) B. A. or B.Sc degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in: (a) Anthropology (b) African Studies, (c ) Sociology (d) History (e) Archaeology (f) Museum Studies. Candidates with deficiencies may be required to register for and pass lower course(s) from any or all of the following undergraduate Art History courses FAH 213, FAH 223, HAH 316, FAH 326, and FAH 426 as may be deemed necessary by the supervisor(s).

Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree programme

(a) A reputable B.A. or B.F.A. in studio art with specialization in painting, sculpture, advertising, printmaking, textile/fashion design and ceramics. All candidates must show a portfolio of minimum of 25 pieces of the applicant‟s work which will be reviewed by the postgraduate. Sub-Committee of the Department.

(b) Candidates with H.N.D. certificates plus six years post-graduation experience with Upper Credit Pass and B.Ed (Fine /Applied Arts degree with two years post-graduation experience may also be considered.

(i) The candidates must possess the degree of Master of Arts in Art History with a minimum cumulative weighted average of 60% or an M. Phil in Art History from any University recognized by University of Benin.

(ii) In Exceptional Cases, candidates with a minimum weighted average of 60% in Master of Fine Art may be considered provided that such candidates possess in addition to the MFA, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts not below Second-Class Upper Division.

(iii) Candidates with M.A. (Art Education) and M.F.A.) degrees who are interested in pursuing the Ph.D degree in Art History will be made to complete M.A. Art History Programme with an average score of 50% as a remedial before entering the programme. The candidates admitted under B(i) above may be required to take and pass the prescribed course(s) from the M.A. Art History Programme of the University of Benin, as may be deemed necessary by the Department.

Duration of Programmes

Full Time: a minimum of 3 semesters and a maximum of 6 semesters

Part time: The duration shall be twice the normal period of the full-time programme. A minimum of 4 semesters and a maximum of 8 semesters.

UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, BENIN CITY, NIGERIA IN COLLABORATION WITH NATIONAL CENTRE FOR WOMEN DEVELOPMENT, ABUJA, NIGERIA ADMISSION INTO MASTER OF ARTS (MA) PROGRAMME IN GENDER AND PEACE BUILDING SINCE 2015/2016 ACADEMIC SESSION

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the Master of Arts (MA) programme in Gender and Peace Building.

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A Candidate for postgraduate studies in the University of Benin must have obtained at least five (5) credits in WASC, NECO, GCE (ordinary level or their equivalent, including English and Mathematics or both, as appropriate).
Four credits at Ordinary level OND (not pass), NCE, IJMB or Advance level passes. iii. A holder of a Pass (Degree/Diploma) is not qualified for admission into the postgraduate programmes of the University of Benin.

Admission Requirements:

To be eligible for admission into this programme, a candidate must:

a) Hold a Bachelor degree of the University of Benin or that of any other University with at least a Second-Class Honours Lower Division.
b) Or be a mature candidate who must be a minimum of 45 years old with 15 years working experience holding the HND or Third-Class Honours Degree of a recognized university.

Duration of Programme:

The duration of the Masters Programme is two semesters (12 months) full time, 9 months for course work and 3 months to complete an approved project.

DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ARTS AND MASS COMMUNICATIONS

Admission Requirements:

(a) M.Phil Programme: The admission requirements are the same as the general requirements for admission into higher degree programmes of the University of Benin. Candidates for the M.Phil programme are expected to pass an M.A. Theatre Arts with an average of between 5059%. Also, candidates with an M.A. degree in Art related Discipline like English and Literature, Mass Communication, French, History and other courses in humanities may be admitted but will be required to take some prescribed courses in Theatre Arts at the M.A. level to remedy their deficiencies.

(b) Ph.D. Programme: Candidates seeking admission into the Ph.D. Programme in Theatre Arts must have an M.A. degree in Theatre Arts with an overall average of 60% or a B or an M.Phil. degree in Theatre Arts. Duration of Programme:

(a) The Postgraduate Diploma Programme Full-Time shall be for twelve calendar months except for the Part-time which shall be for at least 3 semesters and at most 6 semesters. Candidates would be expected to register for and pass a minimum of 35 credits. The courses are taught across two semesters and a project done under supervision shall be submitted at the end. For the Part-Time, courses are taught across three semesters with a project at the end.

(b) The M.A. programme shall be for 2 semesters. During this period, candidates would be expected to register for and pass a minimum of 40 credits. The courses are taught across two semesters and a dissertation done under proper supervision shall be submitted at the end. A full-time programme shall not exceed a maximum of twenty-four months. Candidates must also make a mandatory 75% attendance. The Part Time M.A. programme would be taught across three semesters and a properly supervised project submitted at the end of the programme. The Part-Time programme shall not exceed a maximum of 8 semesters.

(c) M.Phil in Theatre Arts: (i) 2 semesters (ii) 3 semesters maximum (d) Ph.D. Theatre Arts: (i) Full-Time 6-10 semesters (ii) Part-Time 8-12 semesters

DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Admission Requirements:

(a) Master of Arts (M.A.) in French programmes. A good Bachelor’s degree in French or its equivalent. Candidates who obtain a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division from other Universities shall be required to produce their academic transcripts for screening.

(b) Master of Philosophy (M.phil) in programme: A candidate who applies for a Ph.D Programme who obtained a masters degree but with weighted Average score (WAS) of between 55.0-59.99% may be admitted into the M.phil programme in the first instance.

(c) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme: Admission to the Ph.D. programme will depend strictly on the possession of a Master degree in a relevant discipline. Candidate must have a weighted average of 60% or CGPA of 3.5 minimum on a 5-point scale.

Duration of Programmes:

(a) Master of Arts (M.A.) in French programme: (i) 2 semesters for full-time students. (ii) 4 semesters for part-time students.

DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

Admission Requirements:

M.A. History: A good Bachelor‟s Degree (a minimum of Second Class, Lower Division with a weighted degree average 55% or GPA if 3.3 on scale 5.0 in History from the University of Benin or any other recognized University. Candidates with a degree in Education with History as the major area or a degree in other disciplines related to History may be considered for admission provided that they meet the above requirements. Such candidates will be required to take make-up courses in History as may be determined by the Department.

Duration of Programme:

The programme runs sessionally and full-time for a minimum of 2 semesters.

(a) MIHD: (Full-Time)

Admission Requirements:

A good First degree (minimum of Second Class, Lower Division) in History or relevant disciplines in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Law and Education. However, a candidate with a degree in an unrelated discipline but has practical experience of at least two years would be required to take prescribed remedial courses.

Master of Arts (M.A.) in Linguistics:

A good Bachelor Degree (Second Class Lower Division or above) in Linguistics from the University of Benin or any other recognized University, or such a Degree in a cognate field deemed adequate as a basis for advanced study in Linguistics (such as in a specific language, sociology, anthropology, education, mathematics or computer science), provided that a student may be required to audit specific undergraduate courses or take special remedial courses in Linguistics in areas in which the Department considers him/her deficient. A Bachelors Degree of Second Class Lower Division may be considered for admission if the weighted Degree Average is high in this Division and if the candidate has compensatory qualifications (such as a background of specific language study or experience).

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Linguistics:

The possession of M.A. Degree in Linguistics by thesis or an M.Phil in Linguistics or a cognate discipline. Transfer of registration from the Masters programme, on the recommendation of the Departmental Board of Postgraduate Studies, provided the candidate has obtained a grade not less than a B or 60% average in the M.A. comprehensive examination.

(a) M.Ed degree Programmes (Full-Time and Part-Time To be admitted into the degree of Masters of Educational Foundations programmes, a candidate shall have either or both of the following requirements:

(i) Have a good honours degree in Education of the University of Benin or any University recognized by the Senate, with O/L Credit pass in English Language and Mathematics.

(ii) Have a good honours degree in a teaching subject plus a postgraduate Diploma in Education or any other qualification which the Department and Senate may deem suitable.

(iii) Teacher with the third class honours degree with at least 5 years experience MAY be considered for admission.

(b) M.Phil Degree Programmes (Full-Time Only) To be admitted into the Master of Philosophy programmes in Educational Foundations, a candidate shall have the M.Ed in Educational Foundations of the University of Benin or any University recognized by the Senate with a minimum average of 55% in M.Ed degree examination, including project.

(c) Ph.D Degree Programmes (Full-Time only) The admission requirements for the Ph.D degree in Educational Foundations include: (i) M.Phil degree (ii) M.ED degree with an orally defended thesis (iii) M.Ed degree with project with an average score of 60%. (iv) In all cases, candidates are interviewed by the Departmental Post Graduate Committee which is chaired by the Head of Department. There is no entrance examination.

DEPARTMENT OF VOCATIONAL & TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Admission Requirements:

(a) M.Ed Business Education:

To be admitted into the Degree of Master in Business Education, a candidate must meet any of the following requirements: (1) A good Honours Degree in Business Education of the University of Benin or any other University approved by Senate with a minimum of 2.8 GPA. (2) A good Honours Degree in Business/Secretarial Administration, with a minimum of 2.8 GPA plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). (3) HND (Upper Credit) plus Postgraduate Diploma in Technical Teacher Education. (PGDTECH)

(b) M.Ed Technical Education:

To be admitted into the degree of Master of Education in Technical Education, a candidate shall have either or both of the following requirements:

(1) A good Honours Degree in Technical Education respectively of the University of Benin or any other recognized University with a minimum of 2.8 GPA.

(2) First Degree in Engineering, With a minimum of 2.8 GPA plus A Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

(3) HND (Upper Credit) plus Postgraduate Diploma in technical Education.

To be admitted into the degree of Master of Education in Home Economics, a candidate shall have either or both of the following requirements:

(1) A good Honours Degree (First Class Upper- or Second-Class Lower Division) in Home Economics Education, Food and Nutrition Education, Clothing and Textile Science Education with a minimum of 2.8 GPA.

(2) HND Upper or Lower Credit in Home Economics, Food, Nutrition, Community Nutrition, Clothing and Textile Science, Hotel and Catering Management, Food Technology plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

(3) A good Degree in Home Economics, Food and Nutrition, Home Management, Catering Science, Hotel and Catering Management, Food Technology, Clothing and Textile with a minimum of 2.8 GPA plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

(4) Candidates with Third Class Honours in Home Economics Education and related fields who have more than 5 years teaching experience may be considered.

(d) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Home Economics:

To be admitted into the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Home Economics a candidate shall have either or both of the following requirements:

(1) A Masters Degree with thesis in Home Economics Education, Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textile Science Education from University of Benin or any other recognized University.

(2) A Masters Degree with thesis in Home Economics or other related field from the University of Benin or any other recognized University plus NCE or PGDE.

Duration of Programmes:

(a) M.Ed (Business Education):

The duration of the Master in Business Education programme shall be for a minimum of twelve calendar months, and a maximum of 8 semesters for the full time, and a minimum of three (3) years and maximum of five (5) years during long vacation for part-time

(b) M.Ed (Technical Education):

The duration of the Master in Technical Education programme shall be a minimum of twelve (12) calendar months, and a maximum of 8 semesters for the full-time, and a minimum of (3) and maximum of five (5) years during long vacations for part-time.

The duration of the Master in Technical Education programme shall be a minimum of twelve (12) calendar months, and a maximum of 8 semesters for the full-time, and a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of five (5) years during long vacations for part-time.

(d) Ph.D (Home Economics Education):

The duration of the Ph.D programme shall be for a minimum of twenty-four (24) months (full-time) or a minimum of thirty-six (36) months if on Part-Time.

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING:

Admission requirements

A Bachelor of Engineering degree of the University of Benin or other recognized institution of higher learning with a minimum of Third-Class Honours for applicants having other engineering degree.

A Bachelor of Science (in physics Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry and Biochemistry) of the University of Benin or other recognized institution of higher learning with a minimum of Second Class Honours, Lower Division.
b) Masters of Engineering (M. Eng) in Chemical Engineering Applicants with the following qualifications will be considered for admission.
A Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering of the University of Benin or other recognized institution of higher learning with a minimum of Second-Class Honours, Lower Division. OR ii. A Postgraduate Diploma in Chemical Engineering of the University of Benin or other recognized institutions of higher learning with a minimum of Merit classification.
c) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Chemical Engineering

An applicant for the Ph.D degree must possess an M. Eng with research thesis in Chemical Engineering from a recognized institution and must have at least 60%.

Duration of Programme

a) PGD: This is a full time programme. The duration of the programme is a minimum of twelve months and a minimum of Twenty-four months. Lectures will be given on weekdays.
b) Eng: This is a full time programme. The duration of the programme is a minimum of twenty-four months and a maximum of Forty-eight months. All lectures will be given on weekdays.
c) D: The duration of the programme is a minimum of 36 months and a maximum of seventy-two months.

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Admission Requirements:

(a) Master of Engineering (M.Eng) in Civil Engineering:

All candidates must normally have at least a Second-Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Benin or other recognized institutions of higher learning.

Candidates having at least a Second-Class honours (Upper division) degree in other related fields of Engineering or cognate disciplines will be considered on an individual basis. Relevant industrial experience will be an advantage.

Candidates must indicate on their application their intended area of specialization.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Civil Engineering:

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree is mainly by research geared towards preparing students for advanced research and academic career in the chosen areas of specialization. However, students who are found deficient in some areas may be required to take some taught courses. The total number of credits for such courses will normally not exceed 18 credits. Such candidates must pass a written qualifying examination before they can formally commence work on thesis/dissertation. The taught courses may be selected from one or more area of specialization.

Duration of Programmes:

(a) Master of Engineering (M.Eng) in Civil Engineering: 2 semesters minimum 4 semesters maximum

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Civil Engineering: A minimum of 4 semesters a maximum of 8 semesters for all categories of admission to the programmes.

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING

Admission Requirements:

(a) M.Eng in Electrical/Electronics Engineering The following shall be eligible to seek admission into the programme:

Holders of B.Eng degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering with First or Second Class Honours of the University of Benin
Holders of degrees equivalent to (1) from other recognized Universities
Holders of the Postgraduate Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Benin
Persons having any other qualifications which together with relevant experience deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty of Engineering Board of Studies and approved by Senate of the University of Benin.

(b) Ph.D in Electrical/Electronics Engineering

An applicant for the Ph.D programme must possess an M.Eng degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from a recognized Educational Institution and must have a weighted average of 60% or CGPA of 3.50 minimum on a 5 point scale.

Duration of Programme:

M.Eng: The programme shall last for a minimum of 4 semesters (2years) and a maximum of 8 semesters (8months) on full-time.

Ph.D programme: The programme shall last for a minimum of 6 semesters (3years) and a maximum of 10 semesters (5months) on full-time.

Note: No written exams are required for any of the programmes.

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING

Admission Requirements:

(a) Master of Engineering (M.Eng) in Computer Engineering

(i) B.Eng. in computer engineering, electrical & electronics engineering with a minimum of second class honours (Upper division) from the University of Benin or other recognized institutions of higher learning.

(ii) PGD in Computer Engineering at credit level pass (i.e. 3.5 on 5.0 scale) or 60% on weighted percentage average from the University of Benin or other recognized institutions of higher learning.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Computer Engineering: An applicant for the Ph.D degree must possess an M.Eng with research thesis in M.Eng. in Computer Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Benin or other recognized institutions of higher learning.

Duration of Programme:

M.Eng: The programme shall last for a minimum of 2 semesters and a maximum of 8 semesters months on full-time.

Ph.D programme: (i) Full-Time 6-10 semesters (ii) Part-Time 8-12 semesters

DEPARTMENT OF PETROLEUM ENGINEERING

Admission requirements

For M.Eng, Candidate must have B.Eng in Petroleum Engineering or a PGD in Petroleum Engineering For Ph.D, Candidates must have Masters Degree in Petroleum Engineering with an average of 60%.

M.Eng 18 Months which PhD, 36 – 38 months full time

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Admission Requirements

For the M.Eng. programmes in Thermal Power Engineering, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Advanced Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer Engineering, Sound Vibration Engineering, Engineering Design and Manufacture and Applied Energy, to be considered for admission, a candidate shall possess a minimum of:

A Second Class Lower Division degree in Mechanical Engineering obtained from the University of Benin or any other University recognized by Senate.

For M.Eng in Industrial Metallurgy and Corrosion Management, to be considered for admission, a candidate shall possess a minimum of a Second Class Honours Degree in Metallurgy/Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering and Chemical Engineering obtained from the University of Benin or any other University recognized by Senate, with evidence of enough exposure to Metallurgy and Materials at undergraduate level. The evidence is to be provided through the candidate’s transcript.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Mechanical Engineering:

An applicant for the Ph.D Degree must possess an M.Eng with a research thesis in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution and must have a weighted average of 60% or CGPA of 3.50 minimum on a 5-point scale.

Duration:

(a) M.Sc programme: (i) Full-Time 4-6 semesters

Postgraduate Diploma in production Engineering (PGD. Prod. E) (Part – Time).

Applicants for this programme should be holders of:

A Bachelors Degree in relevant Science subjects with a minimum of a third class honours.

iii. A postgraduate Diploma in Engineering of the University of Benin or from other recognized University.

A Postgraduate Diploma in relevant Science subjects.
A Higher National Diploma in Engineering with a pass at the credit level.
Master of Science Degree (Engineering Management) (Part-Time).

Applicants for this programme should be holders of:

A Bachelor‟s Degree in Engineering with a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower division)
A Bachelor‟s Degree in relevant Science Subject with a minimum of second class Honours Lower Division and five years relevant industrial experience.

iii. A postgraduate Diploma in Engineering of the University of Benin or its equivalent with four years relevant industrial experience.

For categories (i) and (ii) above, a write-up on relevant industrial experience will be required as appropriate.
M.Eng. (Manufacturing) Full time
Candidates admitted into the M.Eng. (Manufacturing) Programme shall normally possess a Bachelor‟s Degree in Production Engineering with a minimum of Second Class Honours Lower Division or
a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of second class Honours (Lower Division) and subject to remedial courses.

iii. Professional qualifications and experience in the related field would be of added advantage.

M.Eng (Industrial Engineering) Full time

Candidates admitted into the M.Eng programme in Industrial Engineering shall normally possess either

A bachelor‟s Degree in Engineering with a minimum of second class honours lower division
Professional qualifications and experience in the related field would be of added advantage. e. M.Phil. programme offered: i. Manufacturing Engineering. ii. Industrial Engineering

Admission Requirements

Candidates for the M.Phil. degree programme must:

Hold an M.Sc/M.Eng degree in Production/Industrial Engineering/Mechanical Engineering ii. Have an average score in the M.Eng/ M.Sc course work of between (55-59)%

Doctor of Philosophy programme offered: iii. Manufacturing Engineering iv. Industrial Engineering v. The candidates must have at least a recognized Master Degree in Production Engineering or Industrial engineering or a related Engineering discipline with minimum weighted average of 60% or a CGPA of 3.5 on a 5 point scale. vi. A candidate with an honours Degree in Engineering plus Master of Science Engineering Management will qualify for PhD in Industrial Engineering vii. M.Phil. Postgraduate Diploma in Production Engineering (Part – Time)

The duration of the programme will be a minimum of twenty-four months (Four Semesters) and a maximum of five years (Ten Semesters). All lectures will be given on weekends.

Master of Science (Engineering Management) degree (Part-Time).

The duration of the programme will be a minimum of twenty-four months (Four Semesters) and a maximum of five years(Ten Semesters). All lectures will be given on weekends

M.Eng (Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering)

Full – Time The programme is scheduled to be completed in a minimum period of twelve months (Two Semesters) and a maximum of 48 months (Eight semesters).

Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) Full – Time

M.Phil. (Full Time) 12-24 months e. Doctor of Philosophy

The programme will last for a minimum period of 2 years (24 months) for Full – Time candidates and 3 years (36 months) for Part – Time candidates. And the Programme should not exceed a period of 7 years (84 months) for Full – Time candidates and 8 years (96 months) for Part – Time candidates.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION: No entrance examination in all the programmes.

INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION

(i) HND in any relevant discipline obtained from any recognized Institution or other Institutions approved by the University.

(ii) A degree in Technical subject obtained from a recognized University. Duration of Programme: One academic session of two semesters.

Admission Requirements:

(i) H.N.D. in any relevant discipline obtained from any recognized Institution or any other Institutions approved by the University.

(ii) A degree in technical subject obtained from a recognized University.

INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND EXTENSION SERVICES:

Programme Offered:

To be admitted into the degree of Masters in Health Planning and Management, a candidate shall:

Admission Requirements:

(a) hold an honours first degree in Health Planning and Management or related fields OR

(b) have an honours degree in a discipline other than Health Planning and Management plus at least 3 years experience in Health Planning, Research and Statistics or other relevant Department after graduation;

OR (c) hold an honours first degree in other disciplines but must in addition possess a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Health Planning and Management or related fields from recognized institutions.

(d) A pass degree in Health Planning and Management o any Related Discipline in addition 3 years‟ experience (e) Any other qualification approved by senate of the University.

Duration:

The duration of the programme will be a minimum of 12 months and maximum of 48months. It is a full-time programme.

Entrance Examination: Entrance Examination is not required for admission; the candidates shall be selected on qualifications and other requirements.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION (PGDPA)

Admission Requirements:

(a) A University degree, HND or its equivalent, minimum 3rd Class (b) In addition the applicant must have one year administrative/work experience. Duration: The duration of the programme is 2 semesters. It is a full time programme.

Entrance Examination: There is no entrance examination. The candidates shall be short listed based on their level of pass in a degree or higher diploma examination and must have done one-year NYSC or show a letter of exemption from the relevant authority.

FACULTY OF LAW

Admission Requirements

(a) Masters in Law (LL.M):

In addition to the general regulations and guidelines on admission, a candidate shall normally possess a minimum of good First degree in Law (LL.B) not below a Second Class Lower division, from this University or any other University recognized by the Senate of this University. He is also required to pass an entrance examination. Notwithstanding regulation above, an applicant may be required as a condition for admission to to undergo such test and/or interview as may be prescribed by the Faculty or to take such other prerequisite or concurrent studies required by the Faculty shall be subject to the faculty overall control.

(b) Masters in International Law and Security(M.I.L.S.)

i) It is opened to graduate in law, social sciences,, education sciences and the humanities with at least a second class degree from any recognized Institution or other Institutions approved by the University. No entrance exams for admission

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law:

An applicant for the Ph.D. degree must possess the LL.M. degree of this University or any other University recognized by the Senate of this University, with a minimum of 60% average in the LL.M. result. Notwithstanding regulation above, an applicant may be required to undergo such test and/or interview as may be prescribed by the Faculty or to take such other prerequisite or concurrent studies required by the Faculty shall be subject to the faculty overall control.

A first or second-class Honors degree in a related discipline but such candidates upon admission will be required to undertake certain remedial courses (for AEB and EQM). iii. Ph.D

Applicants for the Ph.D in Animal and Environmental Biology (AEB) must possess an

Duration of Programme

PGD: This programme is designed for three consecutive semesters (18 months)

DEPARTMENT OF PLANT BIOLOGY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

Admission Requirements:

(i) M.Sc.:

Any graduate with a minimum of B.Sc. Second Class Lower Division (Honours) degree in Plant and Biotechnology of Botany of this University or who holds an equivalent from any other recognized Universities or Institutions may be considered for admission to the degree of Master of Science.

(ii) M.Phil:

Candidates on the M.Sc. Programme who score with a minimum average of 60% or B in the course-work examination and who also obtained a minimum of 60% in a seminar presented to the Departmental Board will be qualified to pursue the degree programme for Master of Philosophy. Candidates with M.Sc. degree in Plant Biology and Biotechnology or Botany of this University or any other recognized University who may not have earned an average score of 60% or B in the Masters Programme may be recognized for admission into the M.Phill degree programme.

(iii) (a) Ph.D.:

Candidates possessing qualification (ii) above can proceed to the Ph.D degree programme by transfer (see below), or having satisfactorily completed the M.Phil. Degree or if they possess a master’s degree by research from another University provided, they scored a minimum average of 60% in their course work.

(b) Transfer: An M.Phil candidate who has given a seminar assessed (with at least 60% by the Departmental Postgraduate Committee) may transfer to the Ph.D programme at the end of one session. The candidate may still continue with that same research on a more intensive and/or extended scale.

DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY:

Admission Requirements:

a) Master of Science:

Applicants for this programme should be holders of a first degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Botany, Environmental Science, Optometry, Microbiology and other relevant science area, with a minimum pass of Second-Class Lower division (22).

b) Master of Philosophy

Holders of Master of Science (M.Sc) degree in Biochemistry from this University or any other University who scored an overall average of not less than 50% and not up to 60% in their course work at the Master level.

c) Doctor of Philosophy:

Applicants for this progrmme should be:

(i) Holders of a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) degree with a research thesis in Protein Chemistry and Enzymology, Medical/ Clinical Biochemistry, Toxicology/ Environmental Biochemistry, Ethno-Biochemistry, Nutritional/Food Chemistry.

(ii) Holders of Masters of Science (M.Sc.) degree with weighted average of 60% and/or above Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.50 minimum on a 5-point scale.

Duration of Programmes:

(a) Master of Science (M.Sc.) The programme is designed to last for two consecutive semesters. The course runs fulltime i.e., 12 months minimum.

(b) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil): Full-time 12 months Part-time 18 months

(c ) Ph.D programme: 24-60 months Note: Graduates of part time programmes are not eligible to apply. NYSC discharge certificate is a compulsory requirement.

(i) Holders of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree (at least third class degrees) in Microbiology from the University of Benin or any other University recognized by Senate.

(i) Holders of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree (at least Second Class Honours) in Microbiology from the University of Benin or any other University recognized by Senate.

(iv) Candidates with qualifications such as Fellow of Institute of Medical Laboratory Technology (FIMLT) whose qualifications and experience are deemed adequate may also be considered for admission. These candidates shall register for and pass the following undergraduate courses in addition to the prescribed postgraduate courses: MCB310, MCB410 and MCB412.

(v) Candidates who are holders of HND in Microbiology and low grade degree (Third Class) in related fields of study from this University or any other recognized by Senate will be qualified for the pursuance of Masters degree after successfully completing PGDM programme with an overall result of B (60%) and above.

The Ph.D. Finance programme is an intensive programme developed to train top academia and researchers. Admission therefore shall be opened to candidates with good First degrees from relevant academic discipline and M.Sc. Finance, Insurance, Accounting, Financial Economics and other relevant discipline with proven ability to acquire the tools of financial econometrics and research.

No applicant with an average M.Sc. pass of less than 60% will be registered (transcript and NYSC certificate must be provided). First degree candidate would be required to first complete the M.Sc. Financial Management before being considered for the Ph.D. in Finance.

Candidates will be required to undertake and pass a preadmission selection test and/or interview for the Programme. Those candidates who do not have the M.Sc. Finance or M.Sc.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Programmes:

Admission Requirements:

Admission shall be open to candidates with good First degrees (that is, a minimum of Second Class Lower division) and a Masters Degree (M.Sc.) in the relevant academic disciplines or an (MBA) from the University of Benin or any other recognized university.

Proven ability to apply the tools of business research will also be considered.

Candidates who have an HND (with not lower than Credit Pass) in the relevant area from a recognized Polytechnic and who have also obtained the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) from the University of Benin and, in addition a relevant master degree (as stated above), may also be considered for admission into the programme.

In addition, to be admitted to the PhD programme, a candidate must have at least an average of 60% or an average of B in the relevant degree (as stated above).

Candidates applying for the Ph.D. programme may be required to take qualifying examinations or foundation courses in Business Administration.

Duration of Programme

A minimum of three (3) years shall be required for candidates with first degree and a minimum of two (2) years for candidates with Master‟s degree.

MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MPHIL) PROGRAMME

Admission Requirements

Candidates applying for M.Phil. Programme in Business Administration are expected to possess a Master of Science (M.Sc) degree in Business Administration with a minimum average of between 55% 59% from the University of Benin or any other University approved by the Senate of the University of Benin;
In exceptional cases, holders of at least master’s Degree in Management Sciences and Social Sciences are eligible to apply, provided they possess a first degree in Business Administration or related discipline not below Second-Class Lower division. Such candidates must make up for the deficiencies in core Business Administration courses at the appropriate lower level(s) in Business or at M.Sc Level;
Candidates may be required to satisfy the department in an oral interview or written examination or both prior to admission.
All M.Phil degree programme of the department is by thesis.

Duration of Programme

The course is one year programme followed by a defended thesis and would be done on a full time basis. Master of Science (M.Sc.) Programmes in Business Administration

The M.Sc. in Business Administration Programmes is undertaken in four functional areas: i. Human Resources Management ii. Marketing Management iii. Operations Management, and iv. Global Business Management

Admission Requirements:

Candidates for admission into the various M.Sc programme in the department must have a good bachelor’s degree with a minimum of a Second Class Lower Division in Business Administration (or related disciplines)from the University of Benin or other recognized university.

Candidates with HND in the relevant area from a recognized Polytechnic who have obtained the Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) from the University of Benin and, in addition an MBA from the University of Benin or any other recognized university may also be considered for admission to the programme.

Duration of Programme:

The programmes consist of course work and defended thesis. Each programme has a minimum of (18) calendar months and a maximum of forty-eight (48) calendar months for full-time students. The M.Sc. programmes shall be available for fulltime candidates only.

Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDM)

Admission Requirements:

A degree in any discipline obtained from a recognized University or an acceptable equivalent qualification, coupled with a minimum of one-year post-graduation experience. Holders of HND in any discipline from a recognized polytechnic with not lower than credit pass may also apply.

Duration of Programme

The programme is offered on a part-time basis in 12 months, i.e. One calendar year of three terms. A candidate is allowed a maximum of three years.

Admissions Requirements:

(a) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Computer Science (Part-Time):

Applicants must have at least a third-class honour of the University of Benin or any other recognized institution. Holders of HND with at least credit, or ACCA, ICCA, ICAN, AIB or other equivalent professional qualifications with relevant industrial experience of a minimum of two years may be considered.

Qualifying Examination: There may be a qualifying written examination for all candidates seeking admission into the part-time postgraduate programme in Computer Science only when the number of applicants is in excess of one hundred (100). Admission will be finally determined by the performance of the candidate in this examination.

(b) Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Computer Science (Full Time):

(i) Candidates for the M.Sc. programme must have at least a Second-Class Lower Division, B.Sc. Hons. degree with an average GPA of 3.0 and above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Computer Information Systems from the University of Benin or any other University of recognized standing.

(ii) Candidates with Second Class Lower Division, B.Sc (Hon) degree and above in Engineering or Mathematics or Physics with an average GPA of 3.0 and above may be considered for admission and such candidate will be required to make up for any deficiencies in their preparation by taking and passing the following undergraduate courses: CSC314, CSC313, CSC316, CSC411, CSC432 and CSC211.

This is based on a research for a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 24 months. To be eligible for admission, a candidate must have a master’s degree in Computer Science.

(d) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Computer Science:

An applicant for the PhD degree must possess an M.Sc. with a research thesis in Computer Science from the University of Benin or any other recognized institution and must have a weighted average of 60% in addition to any other criteria as determined by the Department.

Duration of Course:

(i) PGD: the programme is designed to last for four consecutive semesters. The course runs part time 24 months minimum and a maximum of 48 months.

(ii) M.Sc.: full time minimum of 18 months and a maximum of 48 months.

(iii) M.Phil: This is based on research for a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 24 months.

(iv) Ph.D programme: minimum of 24 months and maximum of 48 months.

DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY

Admission Requirements:

(a) Master of Science Geology:

The Master degree programme is open to only graduates with good first degree in Geology or Geoscience from a University recognized by the Senate. In special cases, students with lower classes of degree, but with relevant professional experience, may also be considered for admission. All students shall be assigned one or more supervisor(s) at the time of registration in their intended area of specialization. Within 9 months of registration, a Master candidate shall select a specific topic for his/her thesis/project after due consultations with his/her supervisor(s). A change of supervisor for a candidate maybe permitted only within 9 months of registration.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geology:

The Doctorate Degree Programme is open to graduates with a degree of Master of Science of Philosophy in Geology or any appropriate and related field from the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the Senate. A candidate initially registered for the Master Degree Programme in Geology may be transferred to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in accordance with the University’s postgraduate regulations and subject to satisfactory report from the candidate’s supervisor(s)

Duration of Programme:

Full-Time study for the award of degree of Ph.D. in Geology shall normally last for a minimum period of 4 semesters for a candidate with a Master of Science Degree and a minimum of 18 months for a candidate with a Master of Philosophy Degree. Parttime students are expected to complete their programme in not less than 8 semesters for the M.Sc. degree holder and 36 months for M.Phil degree holder.

CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN GEOSCIENCES (COE)

Admission Requirements

i) Review and assessment of academic standard of prospective students ii) Ability to meet minimum entry requirement – second-class upper (minimum CGPA 4.0) in geology, geophysics, or petroleum engineering

iii) Suitability of the candidates for industry placement based on industry ratings of capacity, achievement and relationship skill. Iv) Applicants in other disciplines in Physical sciences and engineering with the requisite class of degree would be considered subject to their suitability to take necessary remedial undergraduate courses.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

Admission Requirements:

M.Sc: Prospective candidates for the M.Sc/M.Phil in Mathematics or Industrial Mathematics must attain a minimum of Second-Class Honours degree in Mathematics from a recognized University.

Candidates with a minimum of second-class honours degree in a related discipline may be admitted.

Such candidate may be required to first undergo a prescribed preliminary course of studies of possibly up to two semesters duration and earn a minimum of 24 credit selected from the 400 level Mathematics courses.

The candidates in this category are admitted in the Pre-M.Sc class. M.Phil:

A prospective candidate for the M.Phil/Ph.D degree must possess an M.Sc. appropriate to the intended course from a recognized institution.

To be admitted into the Ph.d programme, the candidate must have a minimum weighted average of 60% (B), based on the best six (06) M.Sc. Mathematics courses of University of Benin or equivalent, or CGPA of 3.50 minimum on a 5-point scale.

Where a candidate has less than a weighted average of 60% (b) based on the best six (06) M.Sc Mathematics courses of University of Benin or equivalent, the candidate may be admitted into thenM.Phil programme. A candidate with M.Phil in Mathematics or Industrial Mathematics may be admitted for the Ph.D programme.

Duration of Programmes:

M.Sc and M.Phil: Full – Time: A Minimum of 2 semesters

Part – Time: A Minimum of 4 semesters

Ph.D: Ph.D programme:

(i) Full-Time 6-10 semesters.

A student who fails to complete his course of study within seven calendar years from the date of registration may be asked to withdraw from the programme.

There is no entrance examination into any of the programmes.

a) Master in Economics (M.Sc. Economics):

(c) The Department’s Ph.D. programme has been redesigned and Into the African Economic research Consortium’s Collaborative Ph.D. programme in Africa for which the University of Benin is one of the Degree awarding Universities.

ADMISSION INTO UNIBEN/AERC COLLABORATIVE Ph.D PROGRAMME IN ECONOMICS

The University of Benin in collaboration with the African /Economic Research Consortium, Nairobi, Kenya, wishes to announce the admission of students into the collaborative Ph.D Programme in Economics for the 2014/2015 session. The programme is designed to train a cadre of highly qualified teachers and researchers in Economics.

ELIGILIBILITY:

The programme at the University of Benin is open to nationals of English-speaking West Africa Countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Gambia). Candidates may be self-sponsored or sponsored by public sector institutions and/or research organizations engaged in research and training in Economics and those whose primary mandate is economic management in eligible countries.

THE PROGRAMME:

The Ph.D. Programme is based on course work. To qualify for an award of a Ph.D degree by the University of Benin, candidates will be required to:  Take both compulsory and elective courses in Economics at the Ph.D. level and pass examination in these courses;  Pass a comprehensive examination at the end of their course work;  Write a Ph.D. thesis under supervision and undergo oral examination.

WHERE TENABLE: The programme is tenable at the University of Benin. Successful candidates will take courses in two Universities in Africa and write and defend their theses at the University of Benin.

When admitted, such candidates are expected to specialize in areas most related to their undergraduate training and may also be required to take a few recommended remedial undergraduate courses to improve their knowledge of Geography.

Master of Philosophy of Geography and Regional Planning (M.Phil) Programme:

Admission to the M.Phil programme of the Department is open to applicants with any of the following qualifications:

(i) A higher degree in Geography from the University of Benin or any other recognized University with no lower than 55% average.

Admission to the Ph.D programme in Geography and Regional Planning

Is open to holders of the Masters Degree (M.A; M.Sc.) in Geography or a related subject from the University of Benin or any other recognized University. Students applying for the Ph.D. must score an average of 60% in their courses.

In addition, the student must show good evidence of initiative and capability to sustain intensive and long field research. Holders of M.Phil or M.Sc. by thesis will be considered for admission without reference to average score.

Masters of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) Programme:

Admission to the MURP programme in Urban and Regional Planning of the Department is open to applicants with any of the following requirements:

(i) Holders of first degree in Environmental Studies, Social Sciences and Engineering, among others (with the experience of holders of B.Ed degree).

(ii) Holders of HND with a minimum of Upper Credit pass in Town Planning

(iii) Holders of HND with Lower Credit pass in Town Planning with a minimum of three (3) years of working experience in planning related.

In addition, an applicant may be required as a condition of admission to undergo a selection process.

Duration of Programmes:

M.Sc.: The programme is normally expected to be completed within a minimum 2 semesters for full time and 3 semesters for part time students. The School of Postgraduate Studies may approve an extension where necessary.

M.Phil: The programme is normally expected to be completed within a period of 12 to 18 months. The maximum duration of the M.Phil. programme is 36 months for all students. The School of Postgraduate Studies may approve an extension where necessary.

Ph.D: The PhD programme is a minimum of two years (four semesters) beyond the Master‟s level. It is a four-year programme for part-time students and the course load is half the load for full-time students. The School of Postgraduate Studies may approve an extension where necessary.

DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

MPA Admission Requirements:

(i) A candidate for admission into this programme shall normally have a good first degree or its equivalent.

(ii) A candidate with a University degree must have 2 (two) years post-qualification experience.

(iii) A candidate with a relevant HND qualification must have at least an UPPER CREDIT PASS and 3 (three) years post qualification experience.

(iv) Satisfactory performance in a qualifying entrance examination which may be held for all applicants.

(v) No entrance examination required.

Duration of Programmes:

The course is on a Part-Time basis and runs for two academic sessions covering four semesters. Lectures take place on Fridays and Saturdays (Weekends).

M.Sc.: Admission Requirements:

Admission Requirements:

Applicants for this programme should be holders of a minimum of a Second-Class Honours Degree in Political Science and/or Public Administration or a related discipline.

Applicants will be required to take a research competency test.

Duration of Programmes:

The M.Sc programme is designed to run for a minimum of 3 semesters and a maximum of 4 semesters

Ph.D: Admission Requirements:

An applicant for the Ph.D degree must possess

(i) B.Sc degree in Political Science and/or Public Administration or any other relevant Social Science discipline from a recognized University; and

(ii) M.Sc degree in Political Science and/or Public Administration with a minimum average score of “B” (60%), or Oral Interview may be required.

Duration of Programmes:

The duration of the Ph.D programme is a minimum of 3 academic sessions or (36) calendar months and a maximum of 5 academic sessions (Sixty Months).

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY

PHILOSOPHY/OBJECTIVES

(a) Master of Science (M.Sc.)

(b) Master of Sciences (M.Phil)

The Master Programmes in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology aim to equip the students with relevant skills in the areas of theory and research and the application of the disciplines of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work to enable them to meet effectively the challenges and demands of a dynamic and rapidly changing society.

On the successful completion of any of the programmes, the student should be able to deal with social and cultural issues with a view to making innovative contributions to national development efforts.

(c) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) The objectives of the doctoral programme are to sharpen the critical, analytical and creative skills of the student beyond the master degree level.

Emphasis is on scholarly independent work geared towards the creation of new knowledge, its application and synthesis.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

(a) Master of Science (M.Sc)

(b) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)

Conditions of Admission:

A person who holds a first- or second-class honours degree in Sociology, Anthropology or Sociology and Anthropology or Social Work.

A person who holds a first or second class combined honours degree in Sociology and Anthropology or Social Work.

A person with a third-class degree in Sociology or Anthropology or Social Work with consideration cognate experience in a relevant field may be considered on the recommendation of the Departmental Postgraduate Committee.

Persons holding first or second-class honours degree in any other discipline considered by the Department as related to Sociology and Anthropology or Social Work may apply.

Such candidates will be expected to undertake Sociology, Anthropology or Social Work courses and pass the prescribed examinations.

The courses will be selected from the 200, 300 and 400 level courses and approved by the Departmental Postgraduate Committee.

(c) Doctor of Philosophy

A person who has one of the following qualifications is eligible for admission:

(i) Master of Philosophy degree in Sociology, Anthropology, Sociology and Anthropology or Social Work.

(ii) Master of Arts/Master of Science degree in Sociology, Anthropology, Sociology and Anthropology or Social Work with a defended thesis based on original data.

(iii) Master or Arts/Master of Science degree in Sociology, Anthropology, Sociology and Anthropology or Social Work based on course work and a project report with a score of 60 per cent average and at least three years post Master working experience in relevant fields.

(iv) Persons holding first class and second-class honours degrees and/or Master or Doctorate degrees considered by the Department as related to Sociology and Anthropology may apply.

Such candidates will be required to show evidence of developed interest in the area of specialization.

In addition, such candidates will be expected to take courses and pass the prescribed examinations. The courses will be selected from the 200, 300, 400 and 800 level courses and approved by the Departmental Postgraduate Committee.

DURATION OF PROGRAMME

(a) Master of Science (M.Sc)

Full-Time Programme: A minimum of twelve calendar months will be required to complete the M.Sc programme. The period will be devoted to course work, written examinations, field work and the writing and submission of research project report. Student registration shall lapse after six semesters.

(b) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)

Full Time Programme: A period of two years (four semesters) will be required to complete the M.Phil programme. The first year will be devoted to course work and writing of proposal while the second year will be devoted to fieldwork, writing, submission and defense of thesis/dissertation.

Social Work students will be required to undertake a block-fieldwork practicum and placement. Students specializing in either Industrial and Labour Relations or Development Studies may be required to have industrial attachment for a period of three months as part of their fieldwork training.

Student registration shall lapse after eight semesters.

Full-Time Programme

The minimum period is two years (four semesters) beyond the Master level.

Student registration will lapse after 12 semesters

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK

Conditions of Admission:

(i) A person who holds a First- or Second-Class degree in Sociology, Anthropology or Sociology and Anthropology or Social Work.

(ii) A person who holds a First or Second Class Combined honours degree in Sociology or anthropology or Social Work.

(iii) Students without a degree in social work or sociology/anthropology will be required to take remedial courses and pass them.

FACULTY OF PHARMACY

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICS AND PHARMACEUTICAL TECHNOLOGY

Admission Requirements:

a) Master of Science (Msc)

A candidate for the MSc degree in addition to the general regulations and guidelines on admission, should possess a minimum of a Second Class (Honours) Lower Division degree, or its equivalent, in pharmacy from the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin.

b) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil):

A Master’s degree in Physical Pharmaceutics and/or Pharmaceutical Technology from the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin. Candidate with degrees from other university will be expected to make up for any deficiency in their course work.

c) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D):

A Master’s degree in Physical Pharmaceutics and/or Pharmaceutical Technology from the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin. Candidate must also have a weighted average of 60% or CGPA of 3.50 minimum on a 5 –point scale or an M. Phil Degree in Pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical Technology.

Duration of Programmes:

a) Master of Science (Msc) A Minimum of 18 months based on course work that would last for at least 6 months and an original research project.

b) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil): A minimum of 12 months based on course work and original research project.

c) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D): The programme shall take normally NOT LESS THAT 24 MONTHS.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY

Admission Requirements:

Master of Science (M.Sc)

Candidates must possess a good degree in Pharmacy or Chemistry or any other suitable qualifications approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Studies of Pharmacy.

Candidates who are considered deficient in some areas of Pharmaceutical Chemistry may be required to take prerequisite courses as may be deemed necessary.

Doctor of Philosophy (Pharm. D) conversion

A Bachelor of Pharmacy degree of the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin or any other qualification registered to practice as a Pharmacist by the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria i.e., registered (with the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria) and be practicing Pharmacists.

Duration:

M.Sc: It is expected the programme will not to be less than 2 semesters and based on course work and original research work. The course work shall normally occupy not less than 25% of the prescribed time.

All candidates will take all prescribed courses and will undergo scheduled practical during the duration of the programme.

A candidate who is deficient in some areas of Pharmaceutical Chemistry will be required to take pre-requisite courses during the training programme.

Candidates may not be allowed to start the M.Sc programme until they have completed the pre-requisites courses satisfactorily.

Ph.D: Normally for a period not less than 6 semesters for candidates with a first degree and not less than 4 semesters for candidates with Master‟s degree. No formal course work will be offered.

However, a candidate found deficient will be required to take the necessary courses along with the M.Sc students.

Every candidate registered for the degree of Ph.D will attend and participate in workshops on research techniques and methodology by his/her field of specification offered in the department and determined by his/her supervisor.

In addition, a candidate will be required to present seminars during each year of his/her study on topics chosen by him/her and approved by the supervisor.

DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL PHARMACY & PHARMACY PRACTICE:

Admission Requirements:

(a) Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm) Programme:

(i) A good honours degree in pharmacy from a recognized University (not lower than Second Class honours Lower Division)

(ii) Any other qualification(s) approved by Senate.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD):

(i) An acceptable master’s degree in clinical pharmacy/Pharmacy from a recognized University (ii) Candidates who are deficient in some areas may be required to audit some M.Pharm courses.

Duration of Programme:

(a) MPharm: (i) Full-Time 4-6 semesters (ii) Part-Time 6-8semesters

(b) Ph.D programme: (i) Full-Time 6-10 semesters (ii) Part-Time 8-12 semesters

The School of Postgraduate may approve an extension when necessary.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOGNOSY

(a) Master of Science (M.Sc.) Programme Admission Requirements:

Candidates must possess a good degree in Pharmacy, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or any other suitable qualification approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Studies.

Candidates who are considered deficient in some areas of Pharmacognosy will be required to undertake remedial courses from the undergraduate programme as may be deemed necessary.

Candidates must pass all the remedial courses satisfactorily.

(b) Master of Philosophy Holders of Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Pharmacognosy from University of Benin or any other recognized University who scored below 60% in their course work at the Masters level.

Duration of Programme:

(a) M.Sc programme: (i) Full-Time 4-6 semesters

(b) Ph.D programme: (i) Full-Time 6-10 semesters

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme Admission Requirements

(a) A candidate must possess a good master’s degree in Pharmacognosy

(b) A candidate who has not already obtained a master’s degree shall register, in the first instance, for a Degree of Masters and at the end of at least twelve months may, subject to satisfactory report from his supervisor be admitted as a candidate for a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Duration of Programme:

The programme is expected to be not less than twenty-four months for candidates with master’s degree in Pharmacognosy and is based on original research work.

The time base for full-time student is minimum of 6 semesters, for the part-time a minimum of 8 semesters.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL MICROBIOLOGY

Admission Requirements:

(a) Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Pharmaceutical Microbiology:

Candidates seeking admission to the M.Sc. Degree must satisfy the General

(i) Requirements for Admission into the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Benin. In addition, their undergraduate degree (at least a Second-Class Lower Division) should be in either Pharmacy, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Zoology (or a good degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Laboratory Sciences (Biological Sciences (option).

(ii) Candidates with FIMLT/FMLS, plus 2 years post qualification experience, who in addition to passing a qualifying examination may be considered for admission.

(b) Master of Philosophy Holders of Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Pharmaceutical Microbiology from University of Benin or any other recognized University who scored below 60% in their course work at the Masters level.

An applicant for the Ph.D. degree must possess a master’s Degree in Pharmaceutical with a weighted average that is not less than 50% and not up to 60% or a cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of less than 3.50 on a 5-point scale.

d) Doctor of Philosophy (Pharm. D) conversion

A Bachelor of Pharmacy degree of the University of Benin or any other University recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin or any other qualification registered to practice as a Pharmacist by the Pharmacists‟ Council of Nigeria i.e., registered (with the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria) and be practising Pharmacists.

A candidate registered for the Master’s Degree programme may have his/her registration transferred to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in accordance with the University of Benin Regulations subject to a satisfactory report from his/her supervisor(s).

Duration of Programme:

(a) M.Sc programme: (i) Full-Time 4-6 semesters (ii) Part-Time 6-8 semesters

(b) Ph.D programme: (i) Full-Time 6-10 semesters (ii) Part-Time 8-12 semesters

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY & TOXICOLOGY

Admission Requirements:

Master of Science (M.Sc.) Programme:

Candidates should possess a good University degree (not less than a Second-Class Lower Division or its equivalent) in Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Medicine, Physiology, Biochemistry or Behavioral sciences.

A candidate whose previous background in Pharmacology is considered inadequate by the Department (e.g first degree holders in Biochemistry, physiology) will be required to spend the first year to remedy the deficiency by taking the department’s undergraduate Pharmacology courses which will be followed by a qualifying exam.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) Programme:

Candidates should have an M.Sc. degree in Pharmacology of the University of Benin or any other recognized University. Candidates with degrees from other Universities will be expected to make up for any deficiency in their course work.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme:

Candidates must possess an M.Sc. degree in Pharmacology with a research thesis from a recognized University and must have a weighted average of 60% or CGPA of 3.50 minimum on a 5point scale or an M.Phil degree in Pharmacology.

Duration of programme

MS.c: A minimum of 18 months and a maximum of 36 months
M.Phil: A minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 24 months.
Ph.D: A minimum of 36 months and a maximum of 72 months.

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE

Duration of Programme: Four semesters (24 calendar months) (Full-Time).

Admission Requirements:

(a) Candidate is expected to possess

(a) first degree in Medicine, such as MB, BS; MB, ChB or equivalent, from any recognized university in Nigeria or abroad .

(b) Evidence of enrolment in the fellowship programme of either the National postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria or the West African Postgraduate Medical College, may be an added advantage.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY HEALTH

Admission Requirements:

A first degree in the following categories, not below 2nd class lower in:
Medicine/Surgery and Dentistry)
Other health related science discipline acceptable to the Department (B.Sc Public Health, B.Sc Community Health Not acceptable)
Show evidence of completion or exemption from NYSC
Applicants are expected to have some public health experience

For PhD in Public Health, a. applicants are required to have:

(a) Master’s degree with a dissertation in any of the areas listed with a minimum average score of 60% in courses taken.

(b). A Master’s degree in a field related to reproductive Health and Family Health.

(c). Pass a qualifying entrance examination.

MPH Programmes is on part-time and full-time bases and the candidates are to sit for entrance examination.

Duration of programme

a) MPH: Full time 12 months minimum and maximum 48 months

b). MPH: Part Time minimum 24 months and Maximum 48 months

INSTITUTE OF CHILD HEALTH

Admission Requirements

(a) Candidates must hold a Medical Degree (MBBS, MB, CHB) from a recognized University, at least three (3) years before the date of commencement of the course.

(b) Candidates must be fully registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

(c) Candidates must produce satisfactory evidence to the Institute of a successful preregistration House Job rotation of at least (3) months in Pediatrics.

Duration:

(a) M.Sc programme: (i) Full-Time 4-6 semesters

(b) The programme will run only on PARTTIME basis.

SCHOOL OF BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES

DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY:

Admission Requirements:

M.Sc. in Anatomy: The candidate should possess a B.Sc. with at least a Second-Class honours lower division in Anatomy or a degree in Medicine Dentistry.

Ph.D in Anatomy: The candidate should pass the M.Sc. degree in Anatomy from a recognized University with a weighted average of 60%.

(a) M.Sc programme: (i) Full-Time 4-6 semesters

Admission Requirements:

Master of Sciences (M.Sc.) degree

(a) Candidates must hold a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLSc.) degree from the University of Benin or any other recognized University as approved by Senate.

(b) Holders of B.Sc. Honours degree (at least second-class honours) in related fields such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, MBBS, DBS, Pharmacy, Microbiology.

(c) Candidates with professional qualifications such as Associate of Medical Laboratory science (AMLSN) or Fellow of Medical Laboratory Science (FMLSN) whose qualifications and experience are deemed adequate may also be considered for admission.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree.

Holders of Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in medical Laboratory Science from University of Benin or any other recognised University who scored below 60% in their course work at the Masters level.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme:

Candidates must possess an M.Sc. degree in Medical Laboratory Science with a research thesis from a recognized University and must have a weighted average of 60% or CGPA of 3.50 minimum on a 5-point scale or an M.Phil degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
