What is a search engine?
A Search Engine is a program that finds Web sites and Web pages. Search engine is a tool for locating information on the internet by topic. In other words, it is a site on the WWW, with the help of which you can search for others website. Search engines are particularly helpful in locating Web pages about certain topics or in locating specific pages for which you do not know the exact Web address. A search engine is more effective than a web directory because it matches your information (keywords) to the web pages listed in its index and then displays only on those sites that are relevant and match your criteria.
A web search engine is an interactive tool to help people locate information available via the World Wide Web. Examples of search engines are Yahoo.com, Mamma.com Ask.com, Google.com, Netscape navigator, Askjeeves, Lycos, Mozilla Firefox, Internet explorer Safari.com, etc.
