INEQUALITIES

In mathematics, we use the equal sign, = to show that quantities are the same. How ever, very often, quantities are different, or unequal. The inequalities symbols are as follows:

≠ unequal to

< less than

> greater than

≤ less than or equal to

≥    greater than or equal to

Take a and b to be any number points on number line below:

If a = +3 and b = +3

a and b have the same position on the number line.

Hence, a = b

But if a = 1

and b =  -4

then a  b

or b  a

A linear inequality is an open sentence with an inequality sign.
