PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF ALUMINUIM

– It is a silvery-white solid
– It has a relatively low density(2.7)
– It is very malleable and ductile
– It has a moderate tensile strength
– Its melting point is 6600c
– It is a very good conductor of heat and electricity

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF ALUMINIUM

– At 800°C it reacts with air 4Al(s) + 3O2(g) → 2Al2O3(s)
– It combines directly with most non-metals 2Al(s) + 3Cl2(g) → 2AlCl3(s)
– It reacts with acids 2Al +6HCl→ 2AlCl3 + 3H2
– It reacts with alkalis 2Al+2NaOH + 6H2O → 2NaAl(OH)4 +3H2
– It reduces Iron (III) oxide to iron 2Al(s)+ Fe2O3(s) → Al2O3(s)+ 2Fe(s)
– It forms a white gelatinous precipitate with drops of ammonia.
