Presumably, many reasons are may have caused the students failure of which bulk of them are personal, meanwhile, West African Examination Council in maintaining standard does not resort to that but highlighted peculiar reasons why candidates fail 2019 marketing WAEC and other subjects. Candidates’ Weakness

The following weaknesses ravaged many students’ effort in the exam which cause poor performance, some of the weaknesses observed in the candidates’ scripts were:

  1. Most candidates did not attempt question on application. Where they did, their performance was not good.
  2. Most candidates could not state the elements which would qualify a company’s products to be merchandized at a retail outlet – question 1a.
  3. Also, candidates’ performance was not good in question 2b – functions of marketing in Nigeria and question 3a – features of the post-independence era in the history of marketing in Nigeria

Suggested Remedies

The chief examiner recommended the following in rectifying the observed weaknesses

  1. O’level marketing text books should be made available to candidates preparing for the examination.
  2. Teacher should expose students to the expectations of different question commands, e.g., “State” and “List”.
  3. Teachers should teach students how to answer applied questions.

Candidates’ Strength

Candidates’ strength lies in the fact that they were able to understand the demands of most of the question and were able to answered them well.

Their performance in questions 1b, which was on functions of a merchandizer, 3b which was on calculation of markup, 5 which was on advertising were very commendable.
