Chemistry practical session is technical and goes with rules to obey, the technicality makes many candidates to miss their points in this section. Other reasons why Candidates fail 2016 Chemistry WAEC Practical as highlighted by the council are:
- wrong units /omission of units;
- lack of adherence to instructions;
- inability to deduce inference from observation;
- poor mathematical skills;
- inability to express numerical answers in appropriate number of significant figures;
- poor understanding of the demand of the questions;
- inability to write a balanced reaction equation;
- inability to write correct formula of cations and anions;
- poor knowledge of redox reaction;
- spelling mistakes;
- IUPAC name.
The council’s suggested Recommendations
The chief examiner proffered the following recommendations having identified all the peculiar weaknesses.
Candidates should:
- be exposed early to practical skills;
- improve on their qualitative analysis skills;

Teachers should:
be exposed to seminars and workshops to improve their teaching skills;
- be motivated
- be familiar with the exam syllabus
- cover the teaching syllabus
Candidates’ Strengths
Candidates showed good knowledge and understanding of:
- tabulation of titre values
- concentration of substances in moldm-3
- cations and anions using appropriate reagents; gases
- separation techniques
