Patterns of Settlements simply refer to the arrangement of buildings in a settlement. There are 4 main patterns of settlement namely (a) Dispersed (b) Linear (c) Nucleated and (d) Isolated settlements

DISPERSED SETTLEMENT

These are settlements where the buildings are scattered, far from each other. Usually they have few social amenities and features of rural settlement like farming, lumbering, mining etc. The farms are intensively tilled and there is quiet life style as there is little opportunity for gathering.

PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT OF DISPERSAL SETTLEMENT

Dispersed settlements is a settlement comprising of buildings that are scattered about in given area. It is develop when people go to acquire isolated farmlands. Others prefer quiet environment. There is therefore boundary of family by family in such a pronounced nature and there is marked space from one settlement to the other.

LINEAR SETTLEMENT

Linear settlements are those whose buildings are along routes or roads, railways or rivers in linear form.

PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT OF LINEAR SETTLEMENT

In some cases linear settlement are formed along roads and rivers and tend to develop into nodal towns on road junctions or river confluences like Lokoja (Nigeria) Khartoum (Sudan). It could be several kilometers in length as in the case of Okene (Nigeria), gardens are located behind houses while farmlands are located behind the gardens. The available transport helps in movement to goods to desired towns.
