SUB-TOPIC 1: MODES OF TRANSPORTATION IN NIGERIA
Transportation can be defined as the movement of people, good and services from one geographical area to another either by land, water and air.
In the olden days, goods were transported using animals. However, the modern day’s transportation can be classified into 3, namely (i) land transportation (ii) water transportation and (iii) air transportation.
- LAND TRANSPORTATION
Land transportation takes place on land. They include road transportation, rail transportation and specialized pipeline which is used to transport liquid materials.
(a) HUMAN PORTERAGE: This involves the use of human legs to move from one place to another. This can only be used over a short distance where loads may be carried on the head through footpath.
(b) ANIMAL PORTERAGE: This involves the use of certain animals like horse, donkey, camel etc. to move people and goods from one place to another. This is very common in the Northern part of Nigeria.
(c) ROAD TRANSPORTATION: Road transportation involves the use of vehicles like cars; motor cycles, bicycles, Lorries, trucks to move people and goods from one place to another.
In Nigeria there are three types of roads which are:
- Trunk A Roads: Trunk A roads are roads constructed and maintained by the federal government, they are dual carriage or express roads linking federal and state capitals e.g. Lagos-Ibadan, Onitsha-Enugu, Port Harcourt-Enugu, Kaduna-Zaria-Kano.
- Trunk B Roads: These are roads constructed and maintained by the state government; they link different areas within the state.
- Trunk C (local) Roads: These roads are constructed and maintained by the local government within their locality. In most cases, these roads are not tarred.
