Work, Power and Energy

Work: the work done (W) is defined as the product of the force (F) and the displacement or distance (d) must be in the direction of the force.

⇒ Workdone (W) = Force (F)  displacement (d). ⇒W = F . The unit of work is Joule (J).

Examples:

  1. How much work is done by a force of 18N that moved a load of 500kg through a displacement of 6m?

Solution:

F = 180N           d = 6m             ⇒ W = fd = 180(6) = 1080J.

  1. A particle whose mass is 34kg is acted upon by a force. If the particle moves an upward distance of 100m in the line of action of the force, find the workdone. (take g = 10m/s2 .

Solution: f = ?        m = 34kg             g = 10m/s2

F = mg  =  34(10)   =      340N
