Diphthong is a Greek word which means “double sound”. The articulation of diphthongs involves a glide from one vowel quality to the other. A diphthong is therefore a vowel which changes its quality in the process of its articulation. It maintains two vowel qualities. This can be exemplified in the sounds below:
/ei/ as in cake /keik/
/ai/ as in kite /kait/
/iə / as in career /kəriə/
/eə/ as in care /keə/
Diphthong /ei/: this is closing diphthong with the glide movement of the tongue from /e/ sound to /i/ sound. Words examples of diphthong /ei/ are as followed:
‘a’ e.g. face, lame, bane, mate. ‘ai’ e.g. rain, main, lain, gain. ‘ei’ e.g. eight ‘ay’ e.g. pay, way, ray, may. ‘ey’ e.g. they ‘ea’ e.g. break.
Diphthong /ai/: this is closing diphthong with the glide movement of the tongue from /a/ sound to /i/ sound. Examples of words that contain diphthong /ai/ are: bite, night, aisle, eyes, might, pile, buy, guide, shy, etc
Diphthong /iə/: this is centering diphthong with the glide movement of the tongue from sound /i/ to sound /ə/. Words examples of this diphthong are: hero, period, series, year, area, weird, interfere, atmosphere, nutrient, veracious, etc.
Diphthong /eə/: this is a centering diphthong with the glide movement of the tongue from sound /e/ to sound /ə/. Examples of words that contain this diphthong are: parent, where, their, chair, bear, share, care, vary, prayer, etc.
