Characteristics of Capitalist Democracy.
- Popular Sovereignty: this means that basic governmental decision-making power is rested in all members of the community and not in any particular person or ruling class.
- Political Equality: Every member of the community or state has equal opportunity in the nation’s political decision – making process on the principles of “One Man, One Vote”.
- Majority Rule: In their type of rule, government is not allowed to take decision against the desire of the majority. This implies that political decision requires choices among possible alternatives and each has its own supporters among the sovereign people. Public decision making must be well-informed, fully discussed, without government interference. Therefore, in capitalist democracy, the majority must have their way, but the minority must have the right to their views.
- Popular Consultation: This implies that officials of government should seek and get what public policies the people would like to be adopted and enforced. Leaders should implement only popularly accepted policies and not selfish interest and wishes.
- Respect for Fundamental Human Rights: There is recognition for civil rights such as freedom of speech, Press, Association etc.
- Periodic Election: elections are expected to be periodically held, and made open, free and fair. Elections must comply with the rule of Universal Adult Suffrage and must be open to all qualified adults and monitored by other people and the international community.
- Respect for Rule of Law: This implies that everybody in the state must be equal before the laws of the land. Everybody must be under the same law. Also, all recognized human rights must be put down in the constitution and must be respected by the constitution and must be respected by the people and the government.
