REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT

Meaning of Representative Government

Representative government refers to a government where the people participate in choosing through periodic, free and fair elections, those that will govern them.  It is a feature of modern democracy (Indirect Democracy). It means that the government is made up of appointed or elected individuals.

Features and means of establishing representative government include the following:

  1. Free and fair election
  2. Independent electoral commission
  3. Proper constituency delimitations
  4. Up-to-date electoral register
  5. Periodic election
  6. Enlightened Electorate (Political Education)
  7. Accountability
  8. Toleration
  9. Free press

Advantages of Representative Government

  1. Tolerance of opposition this form of government is more likely to tolerate the views and suggestions of opposition groups, because members of the opposition are also members of the parliament.
