WEEK 2

TOPIC:  FAITH AND WORKS

CONTENT:

  • Salvation is by faith alone not by works. Gal. 1: 14, Ephesians 2:8-9; Hebrews 11:1-3,6
  • Genuine saving faith manifests itself through works. James 2: 14—16

SUB TOPIC 1: SALVATION IS BY FAITH ALONE NOT BY WORKS.

Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by faith all the men of old receive divine approval. And without faith it is impossible to please God. According to Paul, it is by the grace of God that man is saved through faith, and not by our own doing. Salvation is the gift of God, not because of works, lest man should boast.

 EVALUATION:

What is the condition necessary for salvation?

SUB TOPIC 2: GENUINE SAVING FAITH MANIFESTS ITSELF THROUGH WORKS. JAMES 2: 14-26; 1:2-27

James advised Christians to live according to the word of the Lord which they had heard. He said it will be no use to hear the word of God and fail to put it into practice. According to James, if anyone is a hearer of the word and not the doer he is like someone who sees himself in a mirror and turns away, and immediately forgets himself. James said: “But be ye doer of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not the doer, he is like a man who observes his natural face in a mirror: for he observes himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.” (James 1:12-24)
