Topic: Introduction of foods and nutrition.

Content: (a) Definition of nutrition, Importance of human nutrition e.g., maintenance of good health.

Sub-Topic 1: Definition of nutrition.

Nutrition is the study of nutrients in relation to their functions in the body. It also involves the study of the chemical and physical properties of the nutrients, their food sources, deficiency symptoms and their appropriate proportion in a balanced diet. Nutrition is the science that deals with the study of nutrients in relation to the functions of the body. Nutrition also is a science that studies what happens to food from the moment it is consumed and taken to various parts of the body where they undergo metabolism and excretion.

Anti-nutrients are substances that prevent the effective utilization of the nutrients in the body.

Malnutrition is a diseased condition that results when the nutrients are not consumed in the correct proportion as required by the body.

Importance of human nutrition e.g. maintenance of good   health.

Foods play important roles in our lives. Good food enables human being to stay healthy, feel energetic and resist infections and diseases.

It helps to replace worn out tissues and promote growth particularly in children. Food is also important in regulating all the body processes and controlling the body temperature.

Adequate nutrition promotes the development of the brain cells which are responsible for our intellectual abilities. In children particularly, good nutrition promotes mental development. Food brings to the human body a variety of pleasures, traditions, associations as well as nourishment. Good food helps to maintain good health and vitality. Good nutrition plays an important role in the maintenance of good health. People who are well fed have more resistance to diseases than those who are poorly nourished.

Sub-Topic 2: Factors affecting foods and nutrition

Availability of food: When food is available, people have access to adequate food and nutrition but when food is short supply, food and nutrition will be affected adversely.

Availability income: When there is enough money, the quality of food and nutrition will improve, while inadequate income will cause low quality in the family diet which will affect the general health of the family members.
