KITCHEN HYGIENE
Meaning of Kitchen Hygiene
A kitchen is a place or rooms where we prepare, cook, serve and eat our food. We also do some necessary cleaning within the home in the kitchen e.g. washing of plates, cutleries, pots, etc.
Kitchen hygiene therefore, is the maintenance of high standards of cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen to prevent food contamination. It also includes adequate care for cooking ranges i.e. shelves, cupboard, sink, floor and the ceiling. In other words, kitchen hygiene brings about a clean kitchen.
Importance of Kitchen Hygiene
It is important to practice the principles of hygiene in the kitchen because doing so gives pleasant results. The following points therefore, show the importance of kitchen hygiene.
- It prevents contamination of food.
- It prevents domestic accidents within the kitchen.
- It prevents house pests that carry disease-causing organisms e.g. rats, flies and cockroaches.
- It makes the kitchen look and smell nice.
- It makes the work in the kitchen interesting.
Things Found In the Kitchen
There are lots of equipment and wares in the kitchen, depending on the type of kitchen in use at home. Common things that could be found in the kitchen are:

- (iv) Grinding stone
- (v) Refrigerator
- (vi) Mortar and pestle
- (vii) Yam pounder
