Meaning of Socialization

Socialization can be defined as the process of acquiring new behaviour through interactions with other members of the society and also by direct learning from others.

Socialization is a long-life process because it goes on throughout one’s lifetime. It is a continuing process whereby an individual acquires a personal identity and learns the norms, values, behaviour, and social skills appropriate to his or her social position.

Stages of Socialization

There are two stages of socialization; they are:

  1. Childhood or primary socialization: This is the stage of socialization that takes place in the family. This is the stage of socialization is very important because the success of the First stage of socialization depends on the primary socialization. Childhood socialization starts from when a child is born until the child grows to join the wider society.
  2. Adulthood or Firstary socialization: This is the stage that sets in later in one’s life. It is the continuation of the primary stage of socialization. It sets in the church, mosque, or school. Those who do not have good childhood socialization have problems of socializing in the Firstary stage
