Chemistry practical isn’t a complex paper, it is sectionalized into 2 parts which it has always be, however, to many amazement, many students fall through in the paper. This piece is aimed at unveiling the Reasons why Candidates fail WAEC Chemistry 2018 practical as outlined by WAEC

Candidates’ weaknesses in the paper were evident in the following areas:

  1. majority of the candidates did not adhere to the instructions
  2. inability to differentiate between molar mass and relative atomic mass
  3. application of wrong unit
  4. inability to calculate mass concentration of solution
  5. inability to identify colours
  6. some candidates wrote clear solution instead of colourless solution
  7. application of theoretical approach to practical questions
  8. majority of the candidates carried out qualitative analysis on solid samples

The council’s remedies as outlined by the Chief Examiner

The Chief examiner after thorough cross checking the peculiarities of candidates’ weaknesses, the examiner thus provides these:

Candidates should:

  1. understand the demands of the questions before responding to them
  2. improve on their communication skills
  3. be familiar with the examination syllabus
  4. learn how to write and balance chemical equations correctly
  5. learn how to write IUPAC names of compounds correctly
  6. improve on their study habit
  7. qualified teachers should be allowed to teach the subject.

The Candidate’s Strengths

A good number of students give a corresponding answer in the following:

  1. majority of the candidates were able to carry out titrations and obtained concordant titre values;
  2. a good number of the candidates were able to calculate average titre value;
  3. majority of the candidates were able to make inferences from observations made during qualitative analysis.
  4. some of the candidates rounded off their answers to three significant figures when concentrations of A and B were calculated.
