In line with the release made by West Africa Examination Council [WAEC], these are the reasons why candidates fail 2016 physics WAEC. This information is pretty useful to prospective candidates and subject’s instructors as it will serve as baseline guideline when preparing students for the next WAEC examination.
Candidates’ Weaknesses
After thorough examination of the candidate’s performance each question, the following weaknesses cause many students a good mark
- Failure to determine components of the velocity of a projectile at its maximum height.
- Difficulty in identifying parts of a cathode ray tube.
- Vague knowledge about rockets.
- Vague knowledge in topics like atomic structure, waves quantum theory and radioactivity.
- Inability to o correctly explain the term net force
Suggested Remedies
Based on the observed weaknesses, the Chief Examiners recommended as follows:
- Effective coverage of the syllabus by the teacher
- Candidates should study and not read Physics
- Qualified and experienced teachers should be posted to schools
- Government should equip school laboratories with apparatus for effective learning
Candidates’ strength
The strength wasn’t enough to save many candidates from failing the subject, the prospective candidates needed to strive to strike it hard on the subject when writing it.
- Correctly state the principle of conservation of linear momentum as well as give relevant examples,
- Recognize the relationship between impulse and change of momentum.
