Speculations may have it around personal reasons; however, the council’s observations are far different from personal reasons but based their own on the prevalent weaknesses observed in the students’ work. In line with the above, here are the reasons why candidates fail 2013 physics WAEC. These reasons are still very valid even till today.

Candidates’ Weaknesses

The identified weaknesses of the candidates included the following:

  1. lack of understanding of the fundamentals of the course
  2. language barrier: – candidates could not express themselves freely hence they resorted to memorization
  3. inability to take precise measurement to required accuracy -inability to plot graphs correctly
  4. disregard of instruction: – some candidates carried out processes preconceived before the examination and thus missed marks.

Suggested Remedies

The suggested remedies were as follows:

  1. physics teachers should be encouraged to attend coordination meetings and view it as seminar/workshop to enhance their performances.
  2. candidates should be exposed to real practical work early enough.
  3. physics laboratories should be well equipped
  4. students should be taught how to plot graphs involving decimal numbers, large figures and how to make deductions from graphs.

Candidates’ Strengths

Many candidates show improvements in the following areas:

  1. Candidates showed great improvement in tabulating their results and recording their observations to the required level accuracy.
  2. They also showed improvement in maintaining consistency in decimal places/significant figures.
  3. Candidates equally improved in the labeling of axes and good scaling of their graphs
