Agricultural Science practical session often regarded as a bonus package by qualified teachers when preparing the students, however, due to persisting negligence and poor adherence to rules among others have been the Reasons Why Candidate Fail 2016 Agricultural Science WAEC Practical

The candidates were unable to:

  1. outline the procedure for carrying an experiment illustrated by a diagram;
  2. state the precautions to be taken when carrying out an experiment illustrated by a diagram;
  3. state the ways in which specimen H (Bean beetle) is economically important;
  4. state the effects of specimen P (Roundworm) on the host.

WAEC recommendations for the candidates

The council pulled across the states the most appropriate recommendations that can be of great help to the students. Based on the observed weaknesses, the Chief Examiners recommended as follow:

  1. Aspects of the syllabus that are related to experiments which are used to analyze soil properties should be emphasized by teachers;
  2. Only graduates of Agricultural Science/Agriculture should be allowed to teach the subject in Senior Secondary Schools in West Africa.
  3. The students should be familiar with practical by conducting required agricultural science practical
  4. The students are to be taught and guided on the use of correct spelling
  5. The rules of writing botanical name should be emphasized

 Displayed Candidate’s Strengths

The candidates were able to:

  1. suggest a suitable title for an experiment illustrated by a diagram
  2. identify the soil samples in an experiment illustrated by a diagram
  3. state with reason, which soil sample is prone to waterlogging from an experiment illustrated by a diagram
  4. describe specimen A (Ranging pole)
  5. state the uses of specimens A (Ranging pole), B (Survey pin) and C (Measuring tape)
  6. state the ways of maintaining specimens A (Ranging pole), B (Survey pin) and C (Measuring tape)
  7. classify specimens G (Grasshopper) and H (Bean beetle) according to their feeding habits
  8. name the parts of crops damaged by specimens G (Grasshopper) and H (Bean beetle)
  9. state the ways of controlling specimens I (Bird) and J (Rat)
  10. name the industries that use specimens N (Bone) and O (Egg)
  11. state the ways of controlling specimen Q (Roundworm) on the farm
