The subject may be complicated or fun depending on the approach and the person of the teacher that teaches it, either way it may, your almost gain is to pass it if you enroll for it as a student. Though, it may not be a popular subject like other science-oriented subjects, yet WAEC makes provision for all and sundry and has highlighted the reasons why candidates fail 2019 Geography Map Reading in WAEC. Prospective candidates and subject teacher should adhere to the reasons and use it when teaching.

Candidates’ Weaknesses

The weaknesses observed on the candidates’ scripts are explained below:

  1. Poor map work

Many of the candidates had challenges with the map work as they prepared for map reduction and enlargement. Quite a good proportion of them were not prepared for the computation of gradient, and representation of relief features on contour maps.

  1. Poor computational skills

Many of the candidates could not compute the required gradient probably because they have not been taught by their teachers, neither have they read it in textbooks. Some of the candidates could not also compute the required number of dots from the statistical figures given.

WAEC Recommendations

The candidates could improve on their computational skills as well as skills on representation of features on maps by:

  1. Constant practice on the identification of relief feature on maps
  2. Practice exercises could be made on the identification of relief features such as spurs, valleys, col, pass, conical hill, ridge, plateau, steep slopes, gentle slopes, knoll etc.
  3. Mastery of statistical mapping: Mastery on statistical computation and mapping could be effected through constant practice. Exercises should be identified and worked upon for mastery.

Candidates’ Strengths

Some of the candidates followed the rubrics and explained their points well, illustrating them with diagrams where required to score high marks.
