Marketing is regarded as trade subject by WAEC and so, this make it an optional subject for the candidates, either way it may be, West African Examination Council highlighted the following as the observed reasons why candidates fail 2017 marketing WAEC. You are advice as a prospective candidate to stay tune and adhere.

Candidates’ Weaknesses

The chief examiner identified the following as the main weaknesses that cause the student to fail in the exam, some of the weaknesses are:

  1. Most candidates did not understand the meaning of market in marketing. That is question 1a. Also, most candidates could not explain the types of market in question 1c.
  2. Most candidates were unable to interpreter and provide required responses to application questions. An example is question 3b and 3c.

Suggested Remedies

Is there any remedy to combat the poor performance? Yes, there are, below are the recommendations from the chief examiner’s desk.

  1. O’ level marketing text books should be made available to candidates preparing for the examination.
  2. Qualified teachers should be employed in schools to teach the subjects.
  3. Teachers should ensure that the syllabus is covered before the candidates’ seat for the examination.
  4. Subject teachers should teach their students how to answer question based on the way the questions were asked so as to give the required response.

Candidates’ Strength

Candidates’ strength lies in the fact that they were able to understand the demands of most of the question and were able to attempt them well. Their performance this year point to that as they performed better than the previous year.
