Going by the data made available by the WAEC, the followings were pinned as reasons why Candidates fail 2013 Commerce WAEC. Carefully study the reasons, suggested and remedies if you are a prospective candidate or the subject teacher.
Some of the weaknesses observed in the candidates’ scripts were:
- Poor use of English language: Most candidates could not explain their points in clear and correct English grammar, thus they lost valuable marks.
- Insufficient Knowledge of the Subject: Most candidates lack good understanding of the subject as a result, they could not satisfactorily attempt some questions on Mail Order Business, Trends in retailing, differentiation of commerce and industry and activities in commerce and industry which were in questions 3 and 1 respectively.
WAEC Suggested Remedies
The following remedies were offered by the chief examiner in order to boost prospective candidate score, carefully take a look!
- The candidates should endeavour to learn the rules of English grammar so as to enable them express their points clearly.
- The candidates should be encouraged to study standard and comprehensive text book on commerce in their preparation for the examination rather than relying on key-points.
- The teachers should thoroughly teach the candidates the aspect of the syllabus that deals with calculation of profit and capital.
- Government should endeavour to recruit qualified Business Education graduations to teach the subject.
Candidate’s Strengths
The candidates shown appreciable effort in these areas:
- Few candidates who attempted question on calculations did not do well. This was in question ten (10).
- Some candidates did well in questions on Business Units which was in question two (2).
- Candidates performed well in questions on explanation of Stock Exchange terms which was in question four (4).
- Candidates’ performance in questions on explanation of Insurance terms was excellent. This was in question five (5).
- Some candidates were able to define market segmentation which was in question eight (8).
- Some candidates observed the rubrics and attempted the required numbers of questions.
