The electronic configuration of sodium is 1S² 2S² 2p6 3s¹ – to form Na+, the one electron in the 3rd shell is lost leaving 8 electrons in the second shell which is a very stable configuration. It is very difficult to lose an electron from any octet configuration i.e. Na+ (g) → Na²+ (g) is impossible to achieve.
