In February 1897, the British colonial forces invaded and conquered Benin City. Oba Ovoranmwen was dethroned and deported to Calabar where he lived and died in the month of January 1914, after sixteen years of British captivity. He was later buried at old Calabar by an official of colonial authority in the absence of his Benin royal family.
