SUB-TOPIC: 1   History and membership

The Niger Basin Commission (NBC) was established by countries located in the Niger basin to maintain better co-operation on the use of the River Basin.  The treaty establishing the commission was signed by the countries concerned in October, 1963.

Membership: The membership of NBC include: The Republic of Benin, Chad, Cameroun, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, and Niger Republic.

River Niger is one of the longest and largest rivers in the world.  It flows through many countries of the West African sub region.  The headquarters of the commission is located in Niamey, Niger Republic.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE NBC

They include the following:

  1. To guide navigations on the Niger river
  2. To ensure the most effective utilization of the resources of the river
  3. To streamline the construction of dams on the Niger
  4. To ensure the most effective use of the Niger water
  5. To undertake schemes to control floods and erosion
  6. To promote studies on the agricultural potentials of the River Niger.

SUB-TOPIC 2: TOPIC: LAKE CHAD BASIN COMMISSION

HISTORY AND MEMBERSHIP OF LAKE CHAD BASIN COMMISSION

The Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) is an organization set up to foster co-operation among countries sharing a common border with Lake Chad with respect to the usage of the Chad.

The Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) came into existence on 22nd May, 1964 when the heads of state of Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Cameroun met at N’Djamena, Chad and signed a treaty formally establishing the commission. The Chad basin is a very large lake which shares borders with four countries. The commission is funded by contributions from the member nations.

The members on Lake Chad Basin Commission consist of the countries that share a common border with Lake Chad. They include

  1. Chad
  2. Niger
  3. Nigeria and
  4. Cameroun

Other members include:

  1. Central African Republic – joined in 1996
  2. Lybia was admitted in 2008
  3. Sudan – Chosen for their proximity
