SUB-TOPIC 1: MEANING OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Trafficking means trading in something that is illegal and unlawful to sell. Human trafficking can be defined as an illegal act of recruiting or trading on person(s) for the purpose of commercial exploitation. Human trafficking is an infringement on the fundamental human rights of those trafficked. According to George Bush, former president of United State of America, Human life is the gift of our creator, and it should never be for sale. The vulnerable groups in this are children, women, young girls and sometimes boys or men for the purpose of making economic gains, finding cheap labour and for sexual exploitation.

In the year 2000, a comprehensive definition of human trafficking was signed by 80 countries and the European Union as was mandated by the United Nations Convention Against transactional organized crimes.

PURPOSE OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

The purpose of human trafficking is making economic gains, finding cheap labour and for sexual exploitation. The victims are made to believe that they will be sent to schools, secure well-paid jobs, engage in lucrative businesses overseas which will improve their standard of living. Unfortunately, these victims will soon find themselves doing degrading jobs such as domestic works, child labour, forced labour, prostitution, begging and servile marriage and are sometimes later sold out by their fake husbands. According to the United Nations, trafficking of human beings is now the third largest source of money for organized crimes after arms and drugs.

SUB-TOPIC: 2 – CAUSES OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Both international and local factors are responsible for human trafficking. Such factors include:

  1. ABJECT POVERTY: Poverty means the state of being poor without money or means of taking care of oneself and the family. When there is poverty in the land the citizens will be ready to do anything to survive whether legitimate or illegitimate.
  2. GREED: Greed is the excessive desire to acquire money, material things and other possessions to the detriment of others. Greed has continued to lure trafficker into this illegal business despite efforts by individual, government and organizations to stop this menace.
  3. LOW SELF ESTEEM: This is a situation where one has little or no confidence in one’s self. Low self esteem often leaves one with the feelings of inferiority complex such that one would be ready to do anything or any kind of job that is offered to you.
  4. CORRUPTION: This is the moral breakdown of the societal norms and value system such that wrong thing is done in place of right thing for personal gain. A country where the entire system is corrupt will find most of her citizens in the business of human trafficking.
  5. POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC INSTABILITY: When a country is politically, socially and economically unstable, it is a sign of poverty, unemployment, low standard of living and all these will lead to human trafficking because the citizens will like to travel out in search of greener pasture.
  6. GENDER/RACIAL DISCRIMINATION: When there is discrimination against women and black people in any country, such categories of people involved would like to travel out in search of peace, affection and better opportunities. This situation will give rise to human trafficking.
