SUB-TOPIC I: MEANING OF MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

Manufacturing industry is defined as the turning of raw materials into new products by mechanical or chemical processes at home (cottage) or industry.

CLASSIFICATION OF INDUSTRIES

Industries are of 3 different types namely: (i) Primary (ii) Secondary (iii) Tertiary industries.

Primary Industries are those industries which involve in extraction (removing) of raw materials provided by nature, e.g. mining, fishing, lumbering, farming and livestock production. It is also concerned with the production of raw materials such as cotton, rubber, palm oil, cocoa and others for the secondary industry

Secondary industries are industries that specialises in the production of raw materials that have been primarily processed by other industries. These includes PAN (Peugeot Automobile Assembly Plant) in Kaduna, the Sanyo Assembly Plant in Ibadan etc. Secondary industries also turn raw materials into consumable or finished goods, e.g. construction, building, textile, ship building, iron and steel and chemical industries.

Tertiary industries are concerned with rending services. Examples include direct services like trading, banking, teaching, medical and transportation. It can be indirect services like the police, soldiers, custom etc. that is to say it provides essential services for the smooth running of the primary and the secondary industries.

MAJOR INDUSTRIAL ZONES IN NIGERIA

In Nigeria, manufacturing industries are classified into four distinct zones viz;

  1. THE NORTHERN-CENTRAL INDUSTRIAL ZONE

The main industrial areas within the Northern zone include Kano, Jos, Kaduna and Zaria. The notable industries in these areas are: textile, food processing, rolling mills and drinks. Of all these areas Kano has the largest concentration of industries.

  1. MID WESTERN INDUSTRIAL ZONE

The Midwestern industrial zone comprises of Edo and Delta states. In Delta state, the main industry/industrial centres include A.T.P. (African Timber and Plywood) Sapele, Osse rubber estate, Iron ore mill at Aladja, and oil refinery at Warri. In Edo state the major industrial areas include Timber and Plywood at Nikorowa; Oil mill processing at Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (N.I.F.O.R) and Iguoriakhi and rubber processing at Iyanomo.

  1. WESTERN INDUSTRIAL ZONE

The western industrial zone is located in western Nigeria in places like Shagamu, Ota, Ifon and Ewekoro in Ogun state; Ibadan, Ife; Apapa, Isolo, Ikorodu, Ikeja, Ogba, Surulere, Mushin, Epe etc. in Lagos state. Within the industrial zone, Lagos has the largest concentration of industries.
