Meaning of consumer education

Consumer education can be defined as the process of enlightening the public about their rights as far as food purchases are concerned. It aimed at educating the public about various laws that govern the manufacture and sales of food.

 Principles of consumer education

No matter the kind of food we are buying, be it dress, lamp, fridge, meat or books, we need to consume wisely depending on how we answer the questions below:

  • What do I want to buy?
  • When do I buy it?
  • How do I buy it?

The principles listed below will help us answer the above questions and make us intelligent consumers:

  • Compare values by visiting many shops to compare prices.
  • Select and buy articles that are not in vogue because they do not become outdated easily.
  • Buy in bulk to reduce cost and save money.
  • Study labels and information on articles before buying.
  • Always buy things that are suitable for their intended use.
  • If possible, make your own foods e.g. soya bean flour; avoid buying convenience food as much as you can.
  • Always buy food in season, they are cheaper and fresher.
  • Avoid buying on credit.
  • Buy in bulk with friends or neighbours and share.

Aims of consumer education

  1. To enlighten the public about their rights as food purchase are concerned.
  2. To educate the public about various laws, standards and sanitary practice that will be followed in food handling at all stages until its final consumption.
