Speech Work: Speaking Skills – Argument, Debate; Vocabulary Development: Words associated with Agriculture (Forestry); Reading Comprehension: Reading for Critical Evaluation: ‘Foreign Exchange Alternatives’(NOSEC, pages 137 – 138) Structure: Kinds of Adverbs (e.g time, place, manner, purpose, etc); Writing Skills: Expository (Guided writing)‘Improving family functioning through love, cooperation, communication mutual respect, trust and confidence’; Summary: Exercise: Use any WAEC/NECO summary question.

Topic: Debate

Content:

A debate is a form of discussion where different opinions are expressed on an issue. It involves using convincing logical arguments to persuade your listeners about your viewpoint. The parties or groups are normally involved in a debate. They are those proposing and those opposing the motion.

Points to Note about Debate:

  1. Well-prepared and organized points.
  2. Itemized your points on a small paper
  3. Talk straight to the audience
  4. Avoid reading your points
  5. Make use of relevant quotations
  6. Avoid being personal or abusive
  7. Control your voice and speak in a normal tone
  8. Do not rush presentation

Outline of a Debate:

A debate has the following special features: the introduction, the body of the argument and the conclusion.

The Introduction: The introduction will depend on the personalities present. In a normal school debate, you may have the following introduction as the chief speaker:

‘Mr. Chairman, special guests, Panel of Judges, the Time-keeper, fellow debaters and members of the audience, good afternoon or good morning…
