TOPIC:         Rising Tone

The rising tone is used to indicate a rise in the pitch of our voice. Remember that it is indicated by the use of the upward arrow (↗). The rising tone can be used in the following ways;

1. To make request

Examples:

1. Close that door, please. ↗
2. Could you lend me your pen? ↗
3. Sweep the floor as soon as you finish, please. ↗
4. To list items.

Examples

1. Mother brought rice, ↗ beans, ↗maggi, ↗ and onions. ↘
2. There was enough food at the party; rice, ↗ salad, ↗ chicken, ↗ and foofoo. ↘
3. She bought bananas, ↗ pineapples, ↗ guavas, ↗ oranges, and ↗ and water melons. ↘
4. To ask questions which require Yes or No as the answer

Examples;

1. Is she your mother? ↗
2. Did you enjoy the meal? ↗
3. Would you want me to visit you? ↗
4. To make polite request

Examples;

1. Please, let’s bury the hatchet. ↗
2. Lend me your pen, please. ↗
3. May I see you briefly, please? ↗
4. To express surprise/disbelief.

Examples:

1. Really ↗
2. What? ↗
3. Can that be true? ↗
