TOPIC: NIGERIA – LOCATION, POSITION AND PHYSICAL SETTING OF NIGERIA:

CONTENT:

  1. Location and Position of Nigeria: (a) Location and position – Latitudes, Longitude, Boundaries and neighbors. (b) Size and distances – (i) North to South (ii) East to West (c) Political divisions – (i) States and their Capitals (ii) Local Government Areas and their Headquarters.
  2. Physical Setting: (a) Relief – (i) Highlands and lowlands (ii) Drainage (major rivers, river basins, etc.) (b) Climate and the season (c) Vegetation belts (savannah and rain forest belts).

Sub-Topic 1: Latitude, Longitude, Boundaries and Neighbours

A WEST AFRICA MAP SHOWING THE POSITION OF NIGERIA

Location: Nigeria is located between latitudes 40N and 140N of the Equator and between longitudes 30E and 150E of the Greenwich meridian. Therefore, the latitude extent or stretch of Nigeria is about 100(40N- 140N) while the longitudinal extent or stretch is 120 (30E-150E).

POSITION: Nigeria is in West Africa. She is bounded in the West by Benin Republic, in the North by Niger Republic in the East by Cameroon Republic, in the north-east by Chad Republic and in the south by Atlantic Ocean.

SIZE: Nigeria is the fourth largest country in West Africa in term of land area after Niger, Mali and Mauritania. The total land area of Nigeria is approximately 923,768 square kilometres.

The greatest distance from east to west is approximately 1,300km while from north to south is about 1,100km. In terms of population, Nigeria is the most populous single country in Africa with 140 million (i.e. 140,003,542) people in 2006 but presently it is over 140 million people. Hence, she is often referred to as ‘the giant of Africa’.
