TOPIC: SPIRITUAL GIFTS

CONTENT:

  1. Definition of Spiritual gifts, Talents 1 Cor. 12: 4-8, Eph.4: 11-13
  2. Distributions of Spiritual gifts 1 Cor. 12; 7-11
  3. Differentiate between Spiritual gifts and talents 1Cor 12: 7, 11; Eph. 4: 11

SUB-TOPIC 1: DEFINITION OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

Spiritual gifts are the special spiritual endowments given by the Holy Spirit to the various members of the church for the common good of the church community. All spiritual gifts are from one Spirit (God). The purpose is for enhancing the church’s growth and wellbeing.

Talents are natural abilities or acquired skill to use for the good of all. The way one makes use of his or her talent shows how much grace such person has received. To make the best use of one’s spiritual gift one has to identify his talent. Christians should make use of their talents to the best of their ability, using all resources at their disposal.

EVALUATION:

  1. a) What is Paul’s advice in his epistle to the Romans on the use of individual talents? b) Identify three functions of spiritual gifts (WASSCE 2005, June)

SUB-TOPIC 2: DISTRIBUTIONS OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

Paul listed out spiritual gifts in 1 Cor. 12: 7-11. These gifts are gift of wisdom, gift of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, working miracles, prophecy, ability to distinguish between spirits, various kinds of tongues and interpretation of tongues

  1. The gift of wisdom: This is the manifestation of wisdom by giving the best solution to a problem that arises. A person with the gift of wisdom gives a suggestion and solution that will solve the problem and not cause fights or division.
  2. The gift of Knowledge: This is the ability to act and talk accurately and truthfully through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
  3. Faith: It is the special ability to believe and maintain the belief that God exists despite that we cannot see Him.
