Sub-topic 1: METHODS OF CULTIVATIG ORNAMENTAL PLANTS

Methods of propagation and planting ornamental plants: Ornamental plants are cultivated through a number of cultural practices or methods. Some factors need to be considered

The factors are:

  1. Choice of site
  2. Planting materials
  3. Method of cultivation
  4. Use of prepared beds
  5. Direct sowing into the soil
  6. Use of nylon bags
  7. Use of pots
  8. Provision of shades
  9. Use of loamy soil /organic manure
  10. Regular watering

SOURCES OF PLANTING MATERIALS

  1. Established private horticultural gardens
  2. Higher institutions
  3. Governmental owned botanical garden
  4. Private houses and offices
  5. Nigeria Institute for Horticultural Research (NIHORT)
  6. From road sides and bushes

METHODS OF PROPAGATION

  1. Propagation by sexual: This is the act of using seeds to produce plants which look exactly like their parents. Examples of plants propagated by seeds are:
  • Sunflower
  • Cana lily
  • Crotalaria
  • Flam of the forest
  • Commelina
  • Lantan

 Advantages of seed propagation

  1. Seeds are small and very convenient to handle and transport
  2. Seeds can last for a long time when properly stored
  • Seeds make establishment of large population of plants comparatively easy

Disadvantages

  1. Plants raised from seeds may not grow and mature uniformly
  2. Seeds may fail to germinate due to dormancy.
