WEEK: 1 & 2

CLASS: Basic Two

SUBJECT: Cultural and creative Arts

TOPIC:  Designing Patterns of basic shapes

BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to make patterns using different shapes

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL: Diagrams of basic shapes, pencil, colors pencil, eraser, drawing books

BUILDING A BACKGROUND: the pupils are familiar with shapes and patterns

CONTENT:

DESIGNING PATTERNS OF BASIC SHAPES

A pattern is simply a design of something. Patterns can be found on our dresses, bags, shoes, caps etc. Shapes are formed when lines are joined together. Shapes can be open or closed. They have angles or can be round. They can also be big or small in size. Shapes are known by their colours or by the numbers or types of lines. Now, let us look at the different types of shapes we have.

Types of shapes and sizes We have two types of shapes, they are: a) Geometric shapes b) Non-geometric shapes a) Geometric shapes are known as ‘Basic shapes’ – Examples of these shapes are circle, triangle, square, rectangle, trapezoid, pentagon, etc.

The square

The square has four lines. All the lines are equal in size. The joining together or combination of these lines makes the square. The square can be big or small in size. Look at the pictures above. Colour only the small square

The circle

A circle is drawn by using only one stroke of line. You make the line to go round to join where it started. Look at the pictures below and draw your own circle in your notebook. In the pictures above, we have the small and big circles.

4 The triangle They are called triangles. The triangle is a shape with three sides and three lines. Sometimes, the sides are equal, sometimes they are not. Their names are sometimes different depending on the lengths of the sides.

Other shapes of triangles are the isosceles triangle and the scalene triangle. Isosceles triangle has two equal sides, while the scalene triangle has no equal sides. Examples are: Isosceles triangle Scale

Here, we will be using basic shapes to make patterns.

Look at these patterns below

The trapezoid

This is another four-sided shape, with one set of parallel lines, while the other set of lines is not parallel

The pentagon

this is a shape with five sides. They can be drawn in many different ways, but these are the most common:

Strategies& Activities:

Step1: Teacher revises the previous topic.

Step2: Teacher introduces the new topic.

Step3: Teacher explains the new topic.

Step4: Teacher welcomes pupils’ questions.

Step5: Teacher evaluates the pupils

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

  1. Explain what shapes are;
  2. identify different types of shapes and sizes;
  3. draw any object of different shapes and sizes.

WRAP-UP (CONCLUSION): Teacher goes over the topic once again for better understanding.

EVALUATION: Pupils are evaluated thus:

Make simple patterns using basic shapes

Answer the following questions.

  1. a) How are shapes formed?
  2. b) Draw the shape of a square, circle and rectangle in your notebook.

Colour each picture red, green, and yellow. c) How many types of shapes do we have? d) What is an isosceles triangle? e) Describe the shape of a pentagon. f) Describe the shape of a coconut.
