WEEK 1

Meaning of Farm Tools

MEANING OF FARM TOOLS

Farm tools are simple equipment that is used on the farm for farm work. Farmers working on the farm cannot do all the farm work with their bare hands. They require farm tools which will make their work easier and faster.

ACTIVITY

  1. List ten home appliances that we use at home that make house chores easier and faster.

There are various types of farm tools, most of which are made of iron blades and wooden handles. Examples are:

  1. Cutlass,
  2. Axe,
  3. Pick axe,
  4. Hoe,
  5. Sickle,
  6. Spade,
  7. Shovel,
  8. Digger,
  9. Garden fork,
  10. Garden trowel,
  11. Garden basket,
  12. Headpan

EVALUATION

WEEK 2

Use of Farm tools

USES OF SIMPLE FARM TOOLS

In the previous lesson, we learned about farm tools, and we saw different examples of farm tools. As farmers work in their farms, they use these simple farm tools to carry out various activities. In today’s lesson, we will be learning the various uses of some of the farm tools.

Cutlass:

  1. Used for cutting and clearing bushes
  2. For transplanting seedlings.
  3. felling of trees

Hoe:

  1. For weeding (removing grasses)
  2. For planting and harvesting.

Spade: 

  1. For digging
  2. For Making ridges.
  3. For mixing manure.

Shovel: 

  1. For loading materials into a wheelbarrow
  2. For transferring soil.

Sickle: This is used for cutting weeds and harvesting farm produce like cacao, rice, and wheat

Hand Trowel: For transplanting seedlings, planting seeds, and applying fertilizer.

Hand Fork: Use for light weeding and for mixing soil.

Axe: Used for slicing or splitting wood and for felling trees

Wheelbarrow: This is used for moving materials within the farm.

Watering can: this is used to water plants and flowers and for the application of liquid fertilizers
