 WEEK 1&2

HOME-MADE POLISH AND CLEANING AGENTS

Learning Objectives

At The end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify different types of home-made cleaning agents;
  2. State the uses of different home-made cleaning agents and polish;
  3. Prepare home-made polish and different types of cleaning agents;
  4. Use the cleaning agents properly.

Instructional Materials:

  • Egg Shell
  • Sand paper leaves
  • Sand powder
  • Edo powder
  • Finely ground charcoal
  • Paw-paw leaves
  • Soap

Behavioral Objectives: pupils are familiar with the topic in their previous classes.

CONTENT

Types of Home-made Agents

Different materials can be obtained or put together and used as home-made agents for cleaning and polishing our shoes, furniture and other things. Some of these home-made agents are:

  1. home-made polish
  2. home-made scouring powder e.g. egg-shell powder, wood ash powder and snail-shell powder
  3. Abrasives such as fine sand powder and sand paper leaves.

The following are the different types of materials that we can use to produce home-made agents.

  1. Fine sand
  2. Edo powder
  3. Finely ground charcoal
  4. Paw-paw leaves
  5. Local sand paper leaves
  6. Soap
Material Use
1. Fine sand This can be used as abrasive for cleaning pots. It should be used on smooth surfaces to avoid scratching.
2. Edo’ powder This is a yellowish substance common in the Nigerian markets: It has a fine smooth texture. It can be used for cleaning ornaments such as copper, gold, brass, etc
3. Paw-paw leaves Fresh pawpaw leaves can be used for cleaning dirty galvanised palls and blackened aluminium pans and pots.
4. Finely ground Charcoal This can be used for cleaning smooth metal surfaces.
5. Local sand paper Leaves (asisa leaves) These leaves have rough sandy surfaces. They can be used as abrasive for cleaning wood surface, blackened pots, etc.

Home Made Cleaning Agent

Cleaning agents are materials that we can use to clean items in the home. There are several home-made cleaning agents, which can generally be grouped into:

  • (i) Soaps
  • (ii) Scouring powder
  • (iii) Abrasives

Making cleaning agents in the home help us save money. Such home-made agents have many uses.

Uses of home-made cleaning agents

  1. Home-made cleaning agents could be used for general cleaning of items used at home.
  2. They could also be used effectively as commercial cleaning agents.
  3. They are also used to clean metallic articles and ornaments used for decoration.
