The procedures:

  1. Any candidate wishing to read for a postgraduate diploma or higher degree of NSUK shall apply for provisional admission, through the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS).
  2. Application for admission for such postgraduate studies shall be made in duplicate, using the prescribed forms obtained from SPGS on payment of appropriate application fees.
  3. The completed application forms, together with copies of relevant certificates and credentials, shall be sent to the Secretary of SPGS.
  4. The Candidate shall in addition, cause:
  5. his former University/Institution to send relevant transcript(s) directly to the Secretary of SPGS.
  6. two academic referees to send their confidential reports on prescribed SPGS forms directly to the Secretary of SPGS.
  7. All documents must reach SPGS on or before a stated closing date for the receipt of application forms.
  8. The SPGS shall forward the application of each candidate to the appropriate Department for consideration and recommendation.
  9. Candidates for Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s degree programmes shall be considered for admission only once in an academic session at the beginning of each session. Doctoral candidates shall be considered twice (at the beginning of each semester).
  10. Any request by candidates who have applied for admission for a change of Department, degree in view, field of study etc must reach the Secretary, SPGS before the closing date of submission of completed application forms.
  11. In respect of every candidate for admission, the Departmental Postgraduate Committee shall recommend as follows to the SPGS through the appropriate School or Faculty Postgraduate Studies Committee.
  • degree or postgraduate diploma in view;
  • field of study (clearly and precisely stated);
  • the supervisor(s)
  • mode of study (in the case of a Master’s programme);
  • status of registration (full time, part-time, or sandwich);
  • other specific Departmental requirements;
  • any other postgraduate matters referred to it by an appropriate University body.

The above information shall be provided on a prescribed SPGS form.

  1. Neither the SPGS nor the Senate of the University shall be obliged to give reasons for the non-acceptance of the candidature of any application for postgraduate studies.

 Registration procedures:

  1. The period of Registration shall be determined from year to year in accordance with prevailing circumstances.
  2. Candidates offered admission may register on payment of the appropriate fees and on the production of either the originals of the certificates claimed in their application forms.
  3. In order to remain a bonafide postgraduate student each candidate shall renew his registration with SPGS at the beginning of each academic year until he is examined on his project report/dissertation/thesis subject, of course, to any other condition provided for in these regulations.
  4. A candidate may register for full-time or part-time programme as applicable and convenient.
  5. Members of staff of the university, including teaching staff and research fellows, who possess the necessary qualifications may be admitted for part-time study.
  6. Any candidate who is engaged in full employment or in any work other than relevant advanced studies for more than twelve (12) hours a week shall register for part-time programme. Any candidate who violates this provision shall forfeit his postgraduate registration.
  7. Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s degree and Doctorate candidates must register within the stipulated period.
  8. Failure to register within the stipulated period shall be deemed to be a case of late registration shall attract the payment of late registration fees as approved by the University.
  9. Any postgraduate student who fails to renew his registration for two consecutive sessions shall be deemed to have withdrawn from his programme.
  10. Postgraduate students shall not, except with the expressed permission of SPGS and Senate, register and pursue more than one postgraduate programme of the University simultaneously.
  11. If it is discovered at any point in the programme that the candidate had gained admission illegally (e.g. inadequate entry qualifications, falsification of documents etc) the registration even if approved shall be null and void. Such candidates may be handed over to law enforcement agents for appropriate disciplinary procedures.

Duration of Programmes

Postgraduate Diploma Programmes (Course work/Project report)

  1. Full-time students: 2 semesters or 12 calendar months;
  2. Part-time students: 4 semesters or 24 calendar months;

Master’s Degree Programme

Full-time Master’s degree by course work/project report/dissertation.

  1. Minimum duration: 2 semesters or 12 calendar months.
  2. Maximum duration: 6 semesters or 36 calendar months.

Part-time Master’s degree by course work/project report/dissertation.

  1. Minimum duration: 4 semesters or 24 calendar months
  2. Maximum duration: 8 semesters or 48 calendar months

 Ph.D Programmes

Full-time Students:

  1. Minimum duration: 4 semesters or 24 calendar months
  2. Maximum duration: 10 semesters or 60 calendar months

Part-time students:

  1. Minimum duration: 6 semesters or 36 calendar months
  2. Maximum duration: 12 semesters or 72 calendar months
