On admission, M.Phil/Ph.D candidates register for M.Phil in the first instance and on satisfactory performance may be subsequently upgraded to Ph.D registration.

Department of Science and Technology Education
M.Phil/Ph.D. Programmes:

The candidate must possess a good Honours Degree in Education. An M.Ed. candidate with a first Degree other than B.A (Ed.), B.Sc. (Ed.) or B.Ed. must possess a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or evidence both of high attainment in the proposed area of study for the Masters of Education Degree and also of breath of study shown to the satisfaction of the Faculty by such things as existing qualifications, publications etc.
At least two years teaching experience judged appropriate for the Faculty of Education or at least three years’ experience in Education other than as a teacher, judged appropriate for this purpose by the Faculty. A candidate with a second class upper or above is exempted from this provision. Candidates with B.Sc (Ed) or B.Ed Degrees awarded by the University of Jos or any approved University may be qualified for admission to read M.Ed (Curriculum) and M.Sc (Ed) Educational Technology.
M.phil/ PhD in Geography Education Entry Requirement
A good Masters degree in Geography Education, with a minimum weighted score average (WSA) of 60%, plus five credits in relevant O level subjects, including Mathematics, English and Geography.

Basic Admission Requirements
The criteria for admission into the PGD programme will be as follows:
Candidates must possess five credit passes including English, Mathematics and two other relevant science subjects at ‘O’ Level.
Candidates with Bachelors degree from an approved university must obtain a minimum of pass degree in the relevant science discipline.
Holders of HND in relevant programmes from approved institutions with a minimum of Upper Credit may also be considered for admission.
Duration of Programme
Full-time Postgraduate Diploma programme shall run for a minimum of two semesters and a maximum of four semesters.
Part-time Postgraduate Programme shall run for a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of six semesters.
M.Sc. Computer Science Programme
Entry Requirements:
All candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics, Physics and two other relevant science subjects at ‘O’ Level.
Candidates with Bachelor’s degrees from an approved University must obtain a minimum of second class lower division with a CGPA of 3.00 in Computer Science or Related Courses for an academic programme.
Candidates with at least a third class degree or HND and University Postgraduate Diploma a with minimum CGPA of 3.00 or a minimum Weighted Score Average (WSA) of 60% in Computer science may be considered for admission into the academic Master’s degree programme.
Master of Philosophy (Mphil)/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme
Basic Admission Requirements
Candidates for Ph.D. admission must satisfy the following conditions:
Candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics and two other relevant science subjects at ‘O’ Level.
Candidates with Bachelors degree from an approved university must obtain a minimum of second-class lower division with a CGPA of 3.0/5.0.
Candidates must have Academic Master’s degree in relevant areas with a CGPA of 3.0/5.0 or Weighted Score Average of 60% and thesis score not lower than 60% (B).
Candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making and problem solving potentials.
Duration of Programme
A full time Doctoral programme shall run for a minimum of 6 semesters and a maximum of 8 semesters.
Part-time Doctoral programmes shall run for a minimum of 8 semesters and a maximum of 10 semesters.
For extension beyond the specified maximum period a special permission of Senate shall be required.
Department of Geology
M.Phil/Ph.D programmes:

Admission into the Ph.D degree programme shall be opened to Master of Science degree holders with at least overall average of 60% and above, from an approved University in the relevant areas listed above. The Ph.D programme is by research, involving fieldwork, tutorial, seminar, project and an oral examination. However, Ph.D students may be required to take general course such as Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, as well as ICT and Research Methodology.

Applied Physics should possess at least a 2nd class lower division degree from a recognized University in the following disciplines: Electronics, Radiation Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or any other related field will be accepted. To qualify for admission into the M.Phil/Ph.D. programme, a candidate must possess a good master’s degree in a subject relevant to his/her intended area of specialization. The quality of the Master’s degree as determined by the academic transcript must meet the standard stipulated in Regulation 44 (3) i.e. a Cumulative Score Average (CSA) of 60% and above and a score in project report of not below 60%.
M.Sc. Programmes:

To qualify for admission into M.Sc. Applied Microbiology and Plant Pathology or M.Sc. Cytogenetic and Plant Breeding, a candidate shall possess a first Class or Second Class Upper Division honours degree in Botany, Microbiology, Biochemistry or in related areas of Agriculture. In exceptional cases, candidates with 2nd Class Honours Lower division in the above subjects may be considered for admission. A degree in Botany, Forestry or Agriculture is required for M.Sc. Cytogenetics and Plant Breeding.
For admission into M.Sc. Applied Microbiology and Plant Pathology, FIMLT (Microbiology or allied discipline like bacteriology), may be considered.
Department of Zoology
M.Phil/Ph.D. Programmes:

Candidates applying for the M.Phil/Ph.D. Programme must be graduates of approved Universities having a minimum Cumulative Score Average (CSA) of 60% at the Master of Science level. This must be in the field of Zoology or in recognized allied programmes.
M.Sc. Programmes:

Candidates applying for the MSc. Programme must possess a first or second-class Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Biology, Agriculture and allied subjects, or a relevant medical or veterinary degree, normally with a first- or second-class honours. In addition, applicants with Fellow of Institute for Medical Laboratory Technology (FIMLT) and allied qualifications with a minimum of two years post qualification experience may be considered.
Department of Microbiology
M.Phil/Ph.D Programmes
Entry Requirements:
Candidate must possess O’ Level qualifications (5 credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Biology and any other science subject with at least a pass in Physics at O’ Level). Candidates must also obtain at least a WSA of 60% or CGPA of 3.5 in a Masters degree programme in Microbiology or allied disciplines. The Master’s degree would be required to be related to the area of microbiology which they seek to take a Ph.D. study.
M.Sc. Programmes:
Entry Requirements:
Candidate must possess a minimum of 5 credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Biology and any other science subject with at least a pass in Physics at O’ Level.
Applicants shall normally hold a first degree with a minimum of a second class lower of the University of Jos or any other University in Microbiology, Biochemistry or relevant allied courses.
Candidates with third class degree of the University of Jos or any other University in Microbiology, Biochemistry or relevant allied courses with three years post qualification experience may be admitted after obtaining a postgraduate diploma in Microbiology with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5 point scale and 3.00 on a 4 point scale. The eligibility of such candidates for admission shall be determined by the Postgraduate School Board in consultation with the Department.
Candidates with Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology or any other relevant allied disciplines with a minimum of Lower Credit (CGPA of 3.50) of the University of Jos or any other recognized University with one year work experience may be admitted.
Candidates with PASS degree, HND or PASS postgraduate Diploma do not qualify for admission.
