Sub-Topic 2: LABOUR:

Labour refers to all forms of human efforts (mental and physical) put into the production of goods and services.

Characteristics of labour

  1. Labour is mobile and has feelings and cannot be used anyhow.
  2. It is a variable and not a fixed asset.
  3. It can be hired or fired.
  4. It can be skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled.
  5. Its output can be improved by training.
  6. The reward for labour wages/salary.

Forms/sources of labour available to farmers:

  1. Family labour
  2. Personal labour
  3. Communal labour
  4. Hired or paid labour

Importance of Labour in Agriculture

  1. It uses other factors for production.
  2. Intellectual labour ensures high agricultural production.
  3. Skilled labour provides the expertise required for major operations.
  4. Labour ensures the success of any agricultural enterprise.
  5. It provides the services required to achieve the various stages of agricultural production.

Agricultural activities that require labour.

Human efforts are required to:

  1. operate farm machines
  2. plant and harvest crops
  3. milk cows
  4. raise farm animals
  5. process and market products
  6. keep farm records
