  1. Spice crop:

These are crops that are used in making food more delicious and palatable by adding taste and flavor to it.

They are usually required in small quantities in human diet.

They are often dried and ground into powder either singly or in combination to give special flavor in food.

Common strong spices include pepper (with hot flavor), nutmeg, ginger, mustard, cinnamon.

Herbs such as thyme, curry, rose-mary, sage, marjoram. Others include onion, garlic, vanilla, locust bean. Each has its characteristic flavor and some are highly medicinal.

  1. Forage crops:

These are crops (grasses and legumes grown mainly for feeding farm animals especially ruminants e. g cattle, sheep and goat).

They can be served to farm animals inform of hay, silage, straw or soilage.

Some food crops such as millet, maize, guinea corn, groundnut can also serve as forage crops to both ruminants and non-ruminants like poultry birds, pigs, and rabbits.

Examples of forage grasses are elephant grass, guinea grass, gamba grass, pueraria,

Examples of forage legumes are centrosema, stylo, calopo, mucuna, etc.

  1. Drug crops:

These are crops planted for making medicines and insecticides. The substances produced by these crops can either be swallowed or inhaled.

Examples are Neem tree(Dongoyaro), opium, Quinine, Eucalyptus, lemon grass, coca, moringa, aloe vera, etc.

  1. Simulant crops:

The products of these crops produce stimulating effects on the body.  They used to increase the body activity. The active material is usually present in their roots, seeds, leaves, barks, stems, etc.

The substances produced by these crops can also be swallowed or inhaled.

 Examples of stimulants are kola, coffee, tobacco, etc.
